Reddit Notifier Puts Reddit Alerts in your Mac's Menubar

Reddit Notifier Puts Reddit Alerts in your Mac's Menubar OS X: Reddit Notifier is a handy Mac utility that lives in the menubar and instantly alerts you to new happenings on your Reddit account.

Once you've given the app your Reddit login credentials (which are only stored on your OS X Keychain), the envelope icon will turn a familiar shade of "orangered" whenever you get a reply or private message. If you receive Mod Mail, the icon will change to a standard alien head to alert you. In the drop-down menu, you'll also find some options for custom audio alerts, a link to the app's subreddit, and an overview of your link and comment karma.

It's a simple app, to be sure, but well worth the $2.99 price tag if you're a frequent redditor.

Disgraced former San Diego mayor Maureen O'Connor: Brain tumor contributed to gambling addiction

(CBS News) Maureen O'Connor was a beloved former mayor of San Diego. But O'Connor's life took a stunning turn after it was revealed she gambled away a fortune.

Prosecutors believe she won and lost more than $1 billion, playing video poker, raiding a charity foundation of $2 million to feed her gambling habit.

O'Connor sat down with CBS News' Bill Whitaker to explain what she thinks led to the addiction that has left her bankrupt.

Asked what's the worst of the situation for her, O'Connor said, "I couldn't do it in private. Very public. If I had my wish, I wished it would be gamblers anonymous, not, 'here's Maureen's story.'"

O'Connor said her story plays out in two acts: "Maureen 1" was mayor of San Diego. Her second act is unfolding in national headlines: a tawdry tale of gambling and lost fortunes. The widow of Robert Peterson, the founder of the West Coast fast-food chain, Jack-in-the-Box, she inherited as much as $50 million, say federal prosecutors.

"I used some of that fortune to help people. And then, some of that fortune, when I started to become 'Maureen 2,' went into an addiction of gambling. ... I lost a fortune. And for that I'm sorry," O'Connor said.

Her game of choice: video poker. She was such a big spender, casinos in San Diego and Las Vegas would lavish her with gifts to keep her coming. She would have come anyway. "It was like electronic heroin," O'Connor said. "You know, the more you did, the more you needed and the more it wasn't satisfied."

She told CBS News she could lose more than $100,000 in a day.

Increasingly desperate, she started to sell off properties to raise millions more -- including a house in an exclusive beach community in La Jolla, right by neighbor, Mitt Romney.

Phillip Halpern, federal prosecutor for the U.S. Department of Justice, said, "And only after all that was done, did she then go and raid a private foundation of over $2 million."

She took the money from her husband's charity. She called it a loan to be paid back. Halpern called it a money laundering and says she won and lost a staggering amount. He said, "We're talking about billions with a 'B.' It's not against the law to bankrupt yourself. The violation was that she raided that charity of $2 million."

For O'Connor -- now penniless -- it's a public humiliation.

O'Connor said during a tearful press conference recently, "I never meant to hurt the city that I loved."

San Diego once loved her. She was the first woman mayor. From 1986 to 1992, she brought in light rail, a convention center, and helped transform San Diego from a sleepy Navy town into the country's eighth largest city.

O'Connor said of the time, "I was interested in doing everything I could to make the city a better city."

As mayor she was always in control. Her gambling was out of control.

"I thought I could beat that machine," she said. "And when it got worse, I didn't know I had the silent grenade in my head that could go off at any time."

The "silent grenade" was a golf ball-sized tumor doctors removed from her brain. They discovered it two years ago when she started hallucinating. She says she believes the slow-growing tumor contributed to her gambling addiction. "It's not an excuse for my gambling, but I think that was, yes, a part of it. You lose your sense of control," she said.

The tumor could have affected her behavior, says her neuropsychologist, Dr. Barbara Shrock. She said, "In about 20 percent of cases in tumors, psychiatric personality or behavioral changes often time are the first symptom of the tumor."

But Halpern is skeptical, saying "she began her gambling run in 2001 -- a decade earlier. It would have to be a pretty slow-growing tumor."

Halpern said the Justice Department will drop the charges if O'Connor repays the charity and gets help for gambling addiction.

O'Connor said, "After the tumor was taken out and I started healing, I have no desire to gamble."

She does desire her city's forgiveness. O'Connor said, "I would hope they would remember 'Maureen 1,' and 'Maureen 2' -- I hope that they would understand."

Hope over anti-resistance flu drug

A new type of flu drug that can stop resistant strains in their tracks shows promise, say US researchers.

It permanently blocks a key enzyme on the surface of the flu virus, stopping it from spreading to other cells.

In mice it was found to effective against strains which were resistant to the two flu antivirals currently on the market, the journal Science reported.

The World Health Organization estimates that influenza affects three to five million people every year.

Resistance to the existing flu drugs Relenza and Tamiflu is becoming an increasing problem, largely due to their overuse.

The more exposure the flu virus has to the drugs - and in some countries it is available as a preventive treatment before people even catch the infection - the more chance it has of working out how to evade their effects.

Yet in the event of a flu pandemic they are the only weapon available for treating patients in the months before a vaccine can be developed.

'Broken key'

A team of researchers from Canada, the UK and Australia developed a compound that binds to an enzyme on the surface of the flu virus called neuraminidase.

This enzyme is responsible for severing the connection between the flu virus and human cell so it can move on and infect other cells.

The new class of drugs - DFSAs - permanently bind to the enzyme, blocking its action and stopping it from spreading further, the journal Science reported.

Currently available antivirals also work by attaching to this enzyme.

But DFSAs do so in such a way that the flu virus cannot evolve to be resistant to the drug without rendering itself useless.

Tests in mice showed it works against both A and B influenza types and known resistant flu strains and researchers are now doing tests in other animals.

Study leader Prof Steve Withers from the University of British Columbia said: "Our drug agent uses the same approach as current flu treatments - by preventing neuraminidase from cutting its ties with the infected cell.

"But our agent latches onto this enzyme like a broken key, stuck in a lock, rendering it useless."

Co-author Dr Andrew Watts from the University of Bath said: "Our drug can work even better in drug resistant strains than in natural viruses emphasising that it is working through a totally different mechanism."

He added that realistically it would be six to seven years before the drug came to market.

Prof John Oxford, a virology expert at Queen Mary, University of London, said the work seemed to be a significant step forward.

"It is always nice to have an extra drug in the medicine cupboard and it would be reassuring if in the near future we had a second line drug."

SOUTH AFRICA: Pistorius investigator replaced by S. Africa?s top detective

South Africa?s police chief appointed its top detective as the new lead investigator in the Oscar Pistorius murder case on Thursday.

The decision came after it emerged that the initial investigator, Hilton Botha, was facing attempted murder charges.

National Commissioner Riah Phiyega said Lt. Gen. Vinesh Moonoo would take over the investigation, saying the Pistorius case would ?receive attention at the national level? and that Moonoo would ?gather a team of highly skilled and experience detectives.?

Botha?s future in charge of the investigation into world-famous athlete Pistorius came into doubt after charges of attempted murder were reinstated against him in relation to a 2011 shooting incident, when he and two other police officers allegedly fired shots at a minibus.

Police blunders

On Wednesday, the prosecution case against Pistorius began to unravel with revelations of a series of police blunders and Botha?s admission that authorities had no evidence to challenge the double-amputee Olympic athlete?s claim he killed his girlfriend accidentally.

Pistorius faces a charge of premeditated murder, but says he shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp accidentally with a licensed firearm after thinking she was an intruder in his house.

In his often confused testimony, Botha, who was described as a 24-year police veteran with 16 years service as a detective, conceded that police had left a 9 mm slug from the barrage that killed Steenkamp inside a toilet at the scene.

Police also lost track of illegal ammunition found inside the house, Botha said, and the detective himself walked through the crime scene without wearing protective shoe covers, potentially contaminating the area.

Botha also claimed in court that police found boxes of testosterone and needles in multiple Paralympic champion Pistorius? bedroom following the Valentine?s Day shooting last week, but then said later he wasn?t sure what the exact name of the substance was.

The prosecution conceded laboratory tests on the substance weren?t yet completed and so it was unclear what it was.

Girlfriend shot ?by mistake?

Pistorius? defence lawyer Barry Roux asserted that authorities were taking ?every piece of evidence to try to extract the most possibly negative connotation and present it to the court.?

The case, which is still only in a bail hearing, has riveted much of the world with its dramatic developments as Pistorius, the man known as the Blade Runner for his famous carbon-fibre running prostheses, says he shot and killed model Steenkamp by mistake.

Pistorius fired four shots through the locked door of a toilet enclosed inside his bathroom because he thought there was an intruder in there, he says.

Prosecutors say he intended to kill the 29-year-old Steenkamp after a fight in the early hours of the morning.

Pentagon buyers authorized to discuss budget cuts with industry

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon's top weapons buyer on Thursday authorized Defense Department purchasers and program managers to begin talking to industry partners about plans for implementing $46 billion in budget cuts on March 1 and what impact it may have on business.

The directions from Frank Kendall, the undersecretary of defense for acquisition, were the first time Pentagon contracting and acquisitions personnel have been authorized to consult with their industry counterparts about the upcoming spending cuts, known as sequestration.

Kendall said in a February 21 memorandum obtained by Reuters that Pentagon purchasers and program managers were "encouraged" to begin making contact with industry counterparts at the discretion of their managers and chains of command.

"It is important we keep industry informed about our plans and involved in our decision-making process to the maximum extent possible, particularly when ongoing or upcoming contract awards may be affected," Kendall said in the memo.

Company officials said they had been warning of the damage sequestration could cause and had been pressing for a solution.

"For over a year, Northrop Grumman has been vocal about the negative impacts sequestration will have on national security, the industrial base, the supplier chain, the workforce, and the national economy," Northrop Vice President Randy Belote said.

An official at another company, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "we're encouraged by any efforts, and we're working closely with our customers to understand how sequestration could impact our programs."

"Significant delays in funding for any production program could threaten the stability of our supply chains, increase costs, prolong delivery schedules and ultimately weaken our national security posture," the official said.

The authorization for Pentagon purchasing officials to begin talking to their industry counterparts comes a week before $46 billion in across-the-board spending cuts are scheduled to go into force on March 1.

Pentagon officials have issued dire warnings in recent days about the potential impact of the cuts. The cuts will be compounded by the fact that the department did not receive an appropriation for this year and is being funded by a "continuing resolution" that keeps spending at 2012 levels.

Officials say 2012 funding levels are about the same as 2013, but the budget priorities are different and much of the money is in the wrong accounts. The Pentagon, they say, has little flexibility to shift funds between accounts and is facing a significant shortfall in some areas.

Kendall said talks with industry would help both sides prepare more effectively.

"Engaging in this dialogue will allow industry to more productively make their own internal business plans to deal with potential sequestration impacts," Kendall said in the memo.

"Feedback from industry will provide valuable insights as government managers decide how best to move forward in attempting to meet the war-fighter requirements and DoD (Department of Defense) needs under severely constrained budgetary conditions."

Kendall's memorandum also encouraged program managers and grant officers to quickly notify companies and universities carrying out Pentagon research about any plans to reduce their grants or awards funding.

"Program and awarding officials ... should work together to notify recipients as soon as practicable after decisions about reductions are made so that recipients have as much time as possible to adjust their program execution plans," Kendall's memo said.

The acquisitions chief said communication would need to be more limited if proprietary information were involved or if the contract was in the process of being awarded.

"However, as a general rule, transparency with industry and academia while we plan for potential sequestration and CR (continuing resolution) is in the department's long-term best interests," Kendall said.

Family threatened by ex-cop recalls 6-day ordeal

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Christopher Dorner's threats to kill officers and the families of those linked to his 2008 firing from the department was backed up with deep research that included surveillance of possible victims, officials said Tuesday.

Chief Charlie Beck told reporters Tuesday that the former Los Angeles police officer "did a lot of homework." Authorities believe he even conducted surveillance near the homes of those who were threatened.

Many officers lived in fear after the threats in Dorner's 11,000-word manifesto were found on Facebook on Feb. 6.

Titled "Last Resort," it led the police to place about 50 officers and their families under protection.

Dorner was spotted circling the neighborhood of Sgt. Emada Tingirides, who feared for the lives of her six children. Her husband, Capt. Phil Tingirides, 54, headed the three-person disciplinary panel that unanimously decided Dorner should be fired for making a false report.

"I know that our family was a target, that my husband was a direct target, and for the first two or three hours, I was in disbelief," Tingirides said Tuesday as she recounted how her family spent the six days as authorities searched for Dorner.

The family's six children, plus a daughter's boyfriend, were under police protection. Officers stood guard throughout the night, escorting the children to sports events and other non-routine activities that Dorner could not have anticipated.

The family slept little as they awaited word on Dorner's whereabouts. Some targets decided to leave town, but the Tingirideses stayed in their Irvine home because of the logistics.

Beck said the department's review of Dorner's firing is under way and will take several months. Dorner, who was black, had claimed he was subjected to racism and was targeted for reporting misconduct.

He died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound during a siege of a mountain cabin near Big Bear Lake. Authorities say he went on a spree of violence that included killing four people, including two law enforcement officers, and wounding three other people.

The wait was made worse by the hype about Dorner's police and military prowess in the manifesto and the media.

"I had this vision of him climbing through the manholes and coming up and slitting the officers' throats and coming in silently to kill us all," Phil Tingirides said.

A neighbor of the Tingirideses said he thinks he spoke with Dorner three or four days before Monica Quan and Keith Lawrence were found murdered in a condo parking lot in Irvine, where the Tingirides family lives. The man had been circling the neighborhood in a pickup truck. When the neighbor saw Dorner's photo and truck on TV, he called the police.

The Tingirideses received strong support for their community, who welcomed them at sporting events despite the presence of armed officers.

Phil Tingirides, a captain at Southeast Area for six years, said a group of active gang members even offered to stand guard.

The family didn't know whether it would last six months or two years. After nearly a week under protection, they talked about long-term plans and considered a move to Colorado or New York.

Both agreed they wouldn't return to work until Dorner was captured.

It was early afternoon when Tingirides received a text message from his ex-wife, who was also under protection, alerting him to the standoff with Dorner in the San Bernardino mountains.

Emada Tingirides called the children in to join them in the bedroom and they watched the end together.

The Tingirideses had few contacts with Dorner prior to the mention in the manifesto. Phil Tingirides, who has been with Los Angeles police for 33 years, had never met Dorner before the disciplinary hearing and was not in touch with him afterward.

Emada Tingirides, an 18-year member of the force, recalled a single conversation with Dorner in 2007, when he was dealing with the disciplinary process and brought it up to her.

"He had spoken about being bummed about the incident and that he was telling the truth and he hoped it wasn't being turned into a race thing because he was black," said Emada Tingirides, who is also black.

"I remember flat-out telling him this is a process; you're not going through this process because you are black. This has nothing to do with your color," she said. "If you're being honest, stick to that."

Phil Tingirides said the incident has helped give him perspective about the community he polices.

At 9 square miles, Southeast Area has roughly 45 homicides each year. Some residents asked why he "hunkered down" under such a threat, and he said he realized more so now what it's like to live with the threat of violence.

"I have a sense of how a lot of the community that we serve on a daily basis feels," Tingirides said.

Amelia Island Concours: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed...

Lamborghini Roadsters

?

... and in the case of Lamborghini, something blue.

?

Fighting for attention at this year's Amelia Island Concours amidst a Ford GT40 reunion and a smattering of Harry Miller's innovative race cars will be a 50th anniversary celebration of that famously irascible Italian manufacturer, Lamborghini, along with two bookends with which to commemorate Lambo's half century: a rare Miura Roadster which first debuted at the 1968 Brussels auto show, and the origami-like Aventador LP700-4 Roadster, which recently enjoyed its press coming out party at Miami-Homestead Speedway.

?

Sure, the open-air V12-powered duo couldn't be further apart technologically. But Lamborghini symbolically linked the new car to the old by making the Aventador's launch color inspired by the same shade of blue, which Lamborghini calls Azzurro Thetys. Will the blue-hued beasts enable the Sant'Agata Bolognese-based carmaker to stand out in a sea of crimson Ferraris, silver Porsches, and who-knows what else will be trucked to the tony automotive gathering??

?

There's only one way to find out, and we'll be on hand the weekend of March 9th to let you know how that goes.

Israeli investigation: Prisoner X hung himself

(AP) ? Israel has partially lifted a gag order over the investigation into the death of an Australian-Israeli man in an Israeli prison two years ago. The probe rules that the man known as "Prisoner X" hung himself.

The story has dominated headlines in Israel for the past week. According to Australian media, the man, identified as Ben Zygier, worked for Israel's Mossad spy agency and was mysteriously imprisoned by Israel in 2010 for unspecified security offenses.

Israel kept the case under wraps for more than two years, acknowledging it last week only 24 hours after Australian ABC broke the story.

According to the new information released Tuesday, Israel concluded the prisoner killed himself on Dec. 15, 2010, by hanging himself with a bed sheet from the bathroom window in his cell.

Canada's ambassador suspects Obama will approve Keystone if he applies 'rational reasoning' [Video]

Report an error

OTTAWA?-?

President Barack Obama will approve the TransCanada Keystone XL pipeline proposal if he applies "rational reasoning," Canada's ambassador to the U.S. Gary Doer said.

"He's a rational, logical person. I believe that the rationale for having Canadian oil and North Dakota and Montana oil going on a pipeline instead of on trucks and trains to the Gulf Coast is logical," Doer said in a weekend interview with Platts Energy Week TV.

Doer, a former NDP premier of Manitoba, also slammed the U.S. media for its Keystone coverage.

"Twenty people protesting do get more attention in the media than the 65% of Americans that prefer to get their oil from Canada rather than Venezuela or the Middle East," Doer said. "When you look at it, public opinion supports it."

The Canadian government hopes the U.S. administration will "do the right thing" and approve $7 billion pipeline proposal, which would ship Alberta crude to the Texas Gulf Coast.

Thousands of anti-pipeline protesters gathered in Washington, D.C., on Sunday to urge Obama to reject the proposal. The administration is expected to make a decision by spring.

In his State of the Union address last Wednesday, Obama vowed action on climate change, leaving environmental activists hopeful he will nix Keystone.

Meanwhile, Canada is touting its own climate change efforts.

"Canada has aligned its goals on greenhouse gas emissions with the United States," said Chris McCluskey, a spokesman for Natural Resource Minister Joe Oliver. "In some cases, such as (closing) coal-fired electricity plants, we have gone further than the United States."

Oscar Pistorius' agent cancels all future races

Antoine De Ras / Redux Pictures

Oscar Pistorius known as the 'Blade Runner' appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates Court for allegedly killing his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in a shooting incident.

By Alastair Jamieson and Andrew Mach, Staff writers, NBC News

UPDATED: 4:30 p.m. ET: The management company of ?Blade Runner? Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius, who allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, has cancelled all of his future races, according to a statement released Sunday.

?I have decided that following these tragic events that we have no option but to cancel all future races that Oscar Pistorius had been contracted to compete in, to allow Oscar to concentrate on the upcoming legal proceedings and to help and support all those involved as they try to come to terms with this very difficult and distressing situation,? Pistorius' agent?Peet Van Zyl?said in a statement.

Pistorius had been contracted to compete in five races between March 9 and May 25 in Australia, Brazil, the United States and England.

Van Zyl said that all of Pistorius? partners and sponsors were supportive and their contractual commitments remain intact, but ?they are happy to let the legal process take its course before making any change in their position.?

Pistorius was charged on Friday with murdering Steenkamp at his home, although the athlete vehemently denied the accusation in a statement issued by his agent on Friday.

A reality television show featuring Steenkamp was aired in South Africa Saturday night, two days after she was killed.

A pre-recorded clip on the ?Tropika Island of Treasure? show featured the law graduate talking about her "exit" from the series, which is filmed in the Caribbean.

As Pistorius spends his fourth day in jail, more details are emerging of what allegedly happened inside his home early that morning, NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

"I think that the way you go out, not just your journey in life but the way that you go out and you make your exit is so important," she said in the clip ? words which have a new meaning in light of her death, in the early hours of Thursday.

Speaking directly to the camera, she said: "I'm gonna miss you all so much. And I love you very, very much."

As Pistorius remained in a Pretoria police station awaiting his next bail hearing on Tuesday, media reports carried more lurid details about the events surrounding Steenkamp?s death.

South African newspaper? The Sunday Tribune reported claims?by an un-named female friend of Pistorius that he called her frantically asking for help after the shooting, while?UK newspaper The People published an interview?with the athlete?s friend, Justin Divaris.

Divaris told the newspaper Pistorius had also called him in a panic ? even before he had called police.

The newspaper said Divaris saw a hysterical Pistorius being detained by cops at the house. ?He was totally incoherent and just kept saying, ?My baba, I?ve killed my baba. God take me away?,? he was quoted as saying.

A pastor who visited Pistorius at the police station on Sunday said he was still distraught.

"I'm gonna miss you all so much! And I love you very, very much," Reeva Steenkamp, slain girlfriend of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, said in a show that aired after she was found shot to death. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

"The Holy Spirit gave me an order that this is now the chance to go pray with Oscar," pastor AJ Wilson told Reuters outside the police station.

"The (police) colonel told him that I have come to pray with him. He just cried and we all cried together."

Pistorius? uncle, Arnold,?on Saturday said the Paralympian was ?numb with shock, as well as grief?.

There was anger in South African at the decision by broadcaster SABC to air the reality show, Reuters reported ? particularly as Steenkamp will not be buried until Tuesday.

"It was very insensitive to put it on air before she was even buried," said 30-year-old insurance consultant Montle Ndlovu, according to Reuters. "It's such a sad story. She was young and pretty and had her whole life in front of her."?

LG's 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro is the first with a Snapdragon 600 quad-core CPU

LG finally showed off the XL 5.5-inch version of its upcoming Optimus G Pro at the end of a Facebook promo last week, and now it's revealed a launch date in Korea, more specs and a window for arrival in North America. Also of note? Its CPU is the just-announced quad-core Snapdragon 600 running at 1.7Ghz. Announced at CES, the 600 is supposed to be a milder upgrade (compared to the potentially 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800) to its predecessor, the powerful S4 Pro. New software tweaks include a dual record that uses both cameras simultaneously and VR Panorama that appears to be similar to Google's Photo Sphere stitching.

Besides the expanded 1080p screen and updated internals, the larger version also sports a slightly larger battery than the Japanese version announced previously by NTT Docomo with 3,140mAh compared to 3,000, but keeps the 2GB of RAM, 13MP rear camera, microSDXC slot and LTE. The phone will be released on local carriers SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus on Wednesday for 968,000 won ($897), while a North American launch is mentioned for Q2 along with the Japanese release. We'll find out more about this phone -- and likely a few others -- at MWC 2013 later this week, for now check out the press release after the break for more specs.

Child-care worker charged in Philadelphia girl's abduction, rape

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A child-care worker accused of disguising herself in traditional Muslim clothing to abduct a 5-year-old girl was arraigned on Friday on rape and kidnapping charges and held on $4 million bail.

Seized as a key piece of evidence in the case was a multi-colored macaw that the child told authorities lived in the home where she had been held captive overnight last month, police and the victim's lawyer, Tom Kline, said.

Authorities have questioned four people in the case but so far charged only Christina Regusters, 19, who worked at an after-school program in West Philadelphia that the victim attended.

Regusters was accused of posing as the girl's mother, who wears Muslim clothing, by dressing in a black headscarf that covered her face in order to take the child out of school on January 14.

Early the next morning, the child was discovered in a nearby playground, partially clothed.

Regusters was arraigned on Friday on 14 criminal counts, including rape, aggravated assault, kidnapping and indecent assault.

"It's just a horrible, horrible crime, what they did to her," Kline said.

The talking bird, seized with a search warrant, was being held by the city's animal control division, said Captain John Darby, head of the police Special Victims Unit.

Kline declined to confirm local media reports that the assailants used the bird to force the child into silence and submission and threatened it would peck out her eyes if she disobeyed. He said information about the bird led to Regusters' arrest.

"It was the fact that the bird was present that was significant, not any particular thing the bird said," Kline said.

Neither Kline nor Darby would provide details of the rape charge against Regusters.

Darby said originally three other occupants of the West Philadelphia house were taken into custody as well, an adult man and woman, and a male juvenile. They have since been released.

"The investigation is still very active," said Darby, who declined to describe a motive.

After her arraignment, Regusters was held on $4 million bail and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for March 6, the office of the Philadelphia district attorney said.

Satechi releases $40 mini router that fits in a purse, works as a repeater

Satechi releases minirouter that fits in your purse, works as a repeater

If you've ever found yourself stuck in the only corner of a hotel room where the WiFi actually works, then Satechi may be able to get you back to the desk. Its Multifunction Mini-Router not only gives you a private WiFi access point from a hotel's wired internet, but functions as a repeater that can distribute a weak wireless signal elsewhere in the room, too. It also works as a standard home router, of course, and even has a bridge mode which lets you take an existing WiFi network and re-transmit it with a different name (and security), useful for combo networks like those in a cafe, for instance. Finally, the client mode lets you plug the Satechi box into a wired device like a Smart TV or set top box to give it WiFi capability -- letting you dodge the hefty freight of proprietary WiFi dongles often not included with such devices. That's a lot of functionality for $40, but if we had you at "WiFi repeater," check the PR and video after the break.

Crippled cruise ship finally docks in Ala.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) ? A cruise ship disabled for days at sea has pulled into the port at Mobile, Ala., but passengers who have described miserable conditions aboard still have hours to wait before they can walk on solid ground.

The Triumph was pulling into port at about 9:15 p.m. Central time Thursday after taking about six grueling hours to be towed from the mouth of Mobile Bay some 30 miles to the port.

Anxious passengers are lining the decks waving, cheering loudly and whistling to those on shore.

Carnival says the 3,000 or so passengers have the option of a seven-hour bus ride to the Texas cities of Galveston or Houston or a two-hour trip to New Orleans. Buses are standing by to take them to their next stop.

7 Qualities Of Uber-Productive People - Business Insider

Some people get more done than others--a lot more.

Sure, they work hard. And they work smart. But they possess other qualities that make a major impact on their performance.

They do the work in spite of disapproval or ridicule.

Work too hard, strive too hard, appear to be too ambitious, try to stand out from the crowd. It's a lot easier and much more comfortable to reel it in to ensure you fit in.

Pleasing the (average-performing) crowd is something remarkably productive people don't worry about. (They may think about it, but then they keep pushing on.)

They hear the criticism, they take the potshots, they endure the laughter or derision or even hostility--and they keep on measuring themselves and their efforts by their own standards.

And, in the process, they achieve what?they?want to achieve.

They see fear the same way other people view lunch.

One of my clients is an outstanding--and outstandingly successful--comic. Audiences love him. He's crazy good.

Yet he still has panic attacks before he walks onstage. He knows he'll melt down, sweat through his shirt, feel sick to his stomach, and all the rest. It's just the way he is.

So, just before he goes onstage, he takes a quick shower, puts on fresh clothes, drinks a bottle of water, jumps up and down and does a little shadowboxing, and out he goes.

He's still scared. He knows he'll always be scared. He accepts it as part of the process. Pre-show fear is like lunch: It's going to happen.

Anyone hoping to achieve great things gets nervous. Anyone trying to achieve great things gets scared.

Productive people aren't braver than others; they just find the strength to keep moving forward. They realize fear is paralyzing while action creates confidence and self-assurance.

They can still do their best on their worst day.

Norman Mailer said, "Being a real writer means being able to do the work on a bad day."

Remarkably successful people don't make excuses. They forge ahead, because they know establishing great habits takes considerable time and effort. They know how easy it is to instantly create a bad habit by giving in--even just this one time.

They see creativity as the result of effort, not inspiration.

Most people wait for an idea. Most people think creativity?happens.?They expect a divine muse will someday show them a new way, a new approach, a new concept.

And they wait and wait and wait.

Occasionally, great ideas do just come to people. Mostly, though, creativity is the result of effort: toiling, striving, refining, testing, experimenting... The work itself results in inspiration.

Remarkably productive people don't wait for ideas. They don't wait for inspiration. They know that big ideas most often come from people who?do,?not people who dream.

They see help as essential, not weakness.

Pretend you travel to an unfamiliar country, you know only a few words of the language, and you're lost and a little scared.

Would you ask for help? Of course. No one knows everything. No one is great at everything.

Productive people soldier on and hope effort will overcome a lack of knowledge or skill. And it does, but only to a point.

Remarkably productive people also ask for help. They know asking for help is a sign of strength--and the key to achieving more.

They start...

At times, you will lack motivation and self-discipline. At times, you'll be easily distracted. At times, you'll fear failure or success.

Procrastination is a part of what makes people human; it's not possible to completely overcome any of those shortcomings.

Wanting to put off a difficult task is normal. Avoiding a challenge is normal.

But think about a time you put off a task, finally got started, and then, once into it, thought, "I don't know why I kept putting this off--it's going really well. And it didn't turn out to be nearly as hard as I imagined."

It never is.

Highly productive people try not to think about the pain they'll feel in the beginning; they focus on how good they will feel once they're engaged and involved.

And they get started. And then they don't stop.

...And they finish.

Unless there's a really, really good reason not to finish--which, of course, there almost never is.

San Francisco?s Exploratorium Teaches iPad Users About Sound With New App

exploratoriumThe Exploratorium is one of the best places in San Francisco to learn about science, especially if you're a kid ? and by releasing iPad apps, including today's launch of Sound Uncovered, the institution can teach a broader audience. As the name suggests, Sound Uncovered illustrates how sound and hearing work. It follows the Exploratorium's first app, Color Uncovered (so if you're trying to figure out what comes next, well, there are three senses left to explore), offering 12 "experiences" that bring different concepts to life ? some of them based on exhibits in the museum itself, others entirely new.

L.A. cocaine bust threatens Canada-U.S. police relations

In the early morning of Sept. 7, 2012, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents and local police descended on an upscale apartment complex in North Hollywood.

They detained two men, seized 15 kilograms of cocaine and $2.5 million ? it's unclear whether the amount was in U.S. or Canadian ? in cash, and ignited a cross-border controversy over how Canadian police handled millions of dollars in illicit cash.

The dispute threatens police co-operation between Canada and the U.S., as a number of sources affiliated with U.S. law enforcement accuse Canadian police of secretly operating an agent on U.S. soil without permission.

One of the arrested men, who was carrying the money, was a 27-year-old car dealership employee from Vancouver. The U.S.-linked sources say he had worked as a Canadian police agent, fraternizing with importers of cocaine and exporters of marijuana.

Believing he was working as a Canadian police agent, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration reluctantly allowed him to return to Vancouver without charge. Shortly after the seizure, the DEA office at the U.S Embassy in Ottawa received a call from Insp. Michel Forget of the S?ret? du Qu?bec, a provincial police force, demanding to know the details of the L.A. arrest, and asking for the $2.5 million back.

"[Forget] wasn't diplomatic or apologetic," a U.S. source told CBC News, believing Canadian investigators were running a covert operation in L.A. without alerting the DEA. "What it was was an international incident."

Forget denies that claim, saying his force has "good relationships" with U.S. law enforcement. Forget said the money confiscated in L.A. is important because it's evidence in Project Loquace ? the Quebec portion of a Canada-wide crackdown on drug trafficking called Project Scrapyard.

?It's not our money," said Forget. "It's the money that was linked to certain crimes that were committed here [in Canada] in the course of the investigation."

The DEA has refused to release the money to Canadian officials, and the second suspect in the L.A. bust remains in custody.

Project Loquace's first string of successes came in November 2012 when Quebec provincial police played the lead role in arresting 111 suspects across the country.

In the process, Quebec police netted $255,000 in cash, 227 kilograms of cocaine, 73,000 pills, 80 kilograms of cannabis, 189 firearms, two Tasers, 13 barrels of a solvent that's commonly used to create date rape drugs, and 53 vehicles.

Project Scrapyard, launched by the RCMP in the spring of 2012 with millions in seed money, is ongoing.

Canadian police deny arrested man was working for them

Forget, in an interview with CBC News, said the Canadian detained in L.A. wasn?t working for his police force.

"At no point did the S?ret? du Qu?bec go into the U.S. to carry on their investigation. At no point did they have an agent, or whoever, to carry on the investigation on their behalf," Forget said.

Eric Slinn, the RCMP?s acting director general for drugs and organized crime, told CBC News the 27-year-old Canadian ?was not an RCMP agent.?

Slinn refused to say whether the man had worked for the RCMP in the past.

The Vancouver Police Department has not responded to questions about the 27-year-old, who Canadian and U.S.-linked sources said is a known member of a Vancouver-area gang.

Officially, the DEA would not comment on the detainment and subsequent release of the man, but a spokesperson with the L.A. DEA office told CBC News the investigation is ongoing.

U.S.-linked sources said American officials are furious, and that the Department of Justice has been asked to start criminal proceedings against the man, who has returned to Vancouver, and are even considering charges against Canadian police if it's determined they sent an agent on a covert mission to L.A without first notifying American authorities.

A U.S. law enforcement source told CBC News that if an agent was operating in L.A. on direction from a Canadian police force, then it was without approval American authorities. That would contravene U.S. Code Title 18, subsection 951, which states that anyone who "acts in the United States as an agent of a foreign government without prior notification to the Attorney General shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 10 years, or both."

A memorandum of understanding exists between the two countries for procedures involving police authorities, but none were followed, U.S.-linked sources said.

"If I want to send an email to Canada, or make a phone call into Canada, I need approval of the Canadian authorities," said the U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Police mum on amount of cocaine dealt during operation

The U.S.-linked sources who spoke with CBC News about the L.A. case are also upset with how Canadian investigators lost track of major amounts of drugs.

They claim Canadian investigators working on Project Loquace infiltrated a domestic gang that traded marijuana for guns in the U.S., and sent $15 million to the infamous Los Zetas drug cartel in Mexico for precursor drugs that were then shipped through the U.S. to Quebec methamphetamine labs.

The U.S.-linked sources complain Quebec police watched 500 kilograms of cocaine be distributed in Ontario and Quebec only to lose track of it ? an amount that they say is worth close to $25 million on the street.

?First of all, I don?t know where you get your figures,? Forget responded in an interview with CBC News. ?We didn't let anything slip through our hands.?

Forget refused to comment on the exact whereabouts of the cocaine his undercover officers tracked into Canada, citing upcoming prosecutions of accused gang members.

?That?s part of the evidence,? said Forget. ?All we did in the course of the investigation was use different means and investigative techniques to [undermine] a very important ring of drug traffickers that was trying to install themselves across the country. This is all I can say right now.?

Suspected College Park shooter said to be quiet, studious

Though much remained unknown about the suspect in the shootings near the University of Maryland's College Park campus, a picture emerged Tuesday of a quiet, studious young man who had completed several high-profile summer internships with NASA.

Dayvon M. Green, 23, a graduate engineering student, had studied industrial and systems engineering at Morgan State University. He was a 2010 and 2011 summer intern at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, close to the College Park campus, according to NASA.

The year before, he was a research intern at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore through the NASA program, according to his NASA profile.

"He was what students aspired to be," Jamol West, a fraternity brother, said of Green, who allegedly killed one of his roommates and wounded another before killing himself. "Very focused on academics, focused on community service. Very well-rounded."

A Morgan spokesman, Clint Coleman, described Green, who was from the Baltimore area, as a "very, very good student." According to the Phi Beta Sigma's Gamma fraternity's website, his GPA was above a 3.5.

In 2010, Green won a $3,000 scholarship through the National Space Grant Foundation and was working on building a central database for NASA.

West, a former Towson University student, said Green helped convince him to join the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity chapter on his own campus, and said the Towson and Morgan State chapters were close. Green was kind, warm and open, West said, usually present at social events even if he was not the center of attention.

"He was a behind-the-scenes person," West said. "That's how he and I bonded."

West said Green was primarily focused on his schoolwork and technology, but also enjoyed football, including the Baltimore Ravens.

Green did not have so much as a traffic ticket until he was cited for drinking in public in November by Prince George's County police, a charge that was dropped earlier this month. University of Maryland officials said Green had not sought mental health treatment through their facilities and the university was unaware of a mental health condition described by police.

Xavier Henry, a University of Maryland Eastern Shore doctoral student who oversaw Green's research during the internship, called him smart, funny and sociable.

"Hearing what happened and some of the details, it just sounds so out of character," Henry said. "We hung out; I took him and some of the other guys fishing sometimes. ... He was a cool guy."

Madhumi Mitra, an associate professor at University of Maryland Eastern Shore, added, "I have never seen any streaks of unusual behavior from him. He worked with a team and everyone was happy with his work."

Looking for Love Potions | Food & Drink | Muse | Nouse

Page 2, object 7 (X)

You may have noticed a very minor theme of Valentine?s Day running through this edition. You may also have observed in daily life that Valentine?s conveniently revolves around food. Chocolate, heart-shaped biscuits, chocolate roses, sugar mice (for the less mature of us), going out for dinner, you name it, it?s been done.

I also find it interesting that food is used in a subtle way so as to boost libido. Oysters, avocado, asparagus, nutmeg, take your pick.

However I generally find these foods are far more effort than they are worth. Take oysters, for example. Once you?ve smashed them on the floor, broken a couple of flimsy knives and finally managed to prise them open using an iron and a bike lock, the romantic and sexual undertones vibe you carefully fostered with rose petals and music and whatnot has scattered into the four winds. Plus you have inedible oysters. Fail on both counts.

So I decided to avoid the logistical nightmare of food, and turn instead to drinks. What could be easier than a simple cocktail for two? In amongst the plethora of sexual enhancement drinks with such charming names as ?Horny Goat Weed? and ?Rabbit Habbit?, lie some interesting discoveries. Like, for example, who knew that ginseng was a form of aphrodisiac?

Red wine, interestingly, is also an aphrodisiac when drunk in moderation ? other than relaxing you it increases blood flow and gets rid of those tiresome inhibitions. ?In moderation? being the key bit there; we all know what perils lie in too much alcohol before sex.

Aniseed works too, but this is not an excuse for the Willow-eager among us ? Sambuca of the quality found in that particular establishment may make you feel like the sexiest goddess on earth, but only until you look at the photos the next day.

Almonds are also a notorious aphrodisiac ? slip some amaretto into your hot chocolate (also a turn-on) and see the effects unfold.

Whether or not drinks flavoured like these foods do actually have the same effect or not, I cannot vouch for. But if you chink the red wine glasses together this Thursday over your avocado, asparagus and nutmeg dish, and find a mysterious bottle of amaretto nestling in the cupboard to go with the chocolate fondant, perhaps you?ve got your night made.

Or alternatively, just go out for dinner like everyone else.
