National Cancer Prevention Day, February 4th, 2012,serves to remind people that when looking at cancer they need to look at prevention, and reducing risks for human health and the environment. The resolution, entered in the House of Representatives, states that when we work to prevent cancer risks, it impacts human health, the environment, and the economy.

?Today on National Cancer Prevention Day, we recognize everyone who has been touched by this terrible disease, either directly or indirectly,? said Congressman Steve Israel, Co-Chairman of the House Cancer Caucus.Having introduced the resolution, he went on to say, ?I encourage all of us to think about prevention and how we can reduce risks in our environment and lead healthy lifestyles. I applaud the work that Less Cancer is doing in this regard.?

At the state level, the work for Cancer Prevention Day started when Resolution SJ 358 passed on February 3, 2011 in the Virginia Senate honoring the work of Less Cancer and naming February 4, 2011, and every succeeding February 4, as Cancer Prevention Day in the state of Virginia.

Virginia State Senator Jill Holtzman Vogel, who introduced the resolution, later said, "It is my honor to undertake the work to establish Cancer Prevention Day in the Commonwealth. The more energy and resources that we direct toward awareness, education and prevention, the more lives we save."

Bert Johnson (D ? Detroit, Michigan) introduced the resolution forFebruary 4th of each year as ?Cancer Prevention Day? in Michigan. ?Nearly everyone knows a friend or loved one who has suffered from or lost someone to cancer,? Sen. Johnson said. ?As with most health care issues, raising awareness and increasing prevention is one of the best ways to combat this disease.?

Bill Couzens, who originally hails from Detroit, Michigan is a graduate of Wayne State University and the Founder and President of the nonprofit Next Generation Choices Foundation and the widely known Less Cancer Campaign. The Campaign has worked to raise awareness for the reduction of cancer risks. Founded in 2004, Next Generation Choices Foundation partners with communities to create and dispense educational tools that focus on environmental health advocacy and lifestyle choices.

The public charity was formed in response to the escalating cases of cancer and the lack of education and knowledge about potential causes. Couzens has been recognized by Congress in addition to the Commonwealth of Virginia for his work in initiating and creating best practices to reduce pesticide drift in health effected communities such as schools. He has been published in a number of periodicals and has been a speaker on the topic of reducing harmful environmental exposures linked to cancer. Couzens regularly speaks on human health and environment issues.

The third-ever guinea pig skeleton found in a European archaeological dig confirms that these little squeakers voyaged to the Old World very shortly after Spain conquered Peru in 1532. While the guinea pigs, also known as cavies, served as food in South America, they seem to have been treated as pets in Europe. They may have even been a privilege reserved for the relatively well-off, at least at first.

That was lucky news for at least one guinea pig whose skeleton was newly unearthed in Mons, Belgium, before the construction of a parking garage in the city. Excavations revealed the current city is built on top of an older village established in medieval times. The spot where the parking garage was to be built was once a sort of medieval suburb ? a residential district right outside the town center.

In the cellar of one of the well-appointed homes in this district, researchers uncovered eight guinea pig bones, likely all from the same animal. Because the bones weren't scattered about, hacked or gnawed upon, the archaeologists are confident the critter was given a proper burial befitting a family pet, not stewed and eaten. Digging up pigs

The archaeological site dates to the end of the 1500s or early 1600s, a range corroborated by radiocarbon dating of the bones. (This method dates material based on the decay rate of its radioactive carbon.) The researchers also analyzed isotopes in the cavy's bones, because these atomic variants can give clues as to an animal's diet. They found that the guinea pig was likely born and raised in Europe ? no big surprise, given that guinea pigs as young as 3 months can have pups, and pregnancies last only about 65 days. It wouldn't have taken long for imported pigs to go native.

Just as people today might dump leftover salad in their guinea pig's cage, the owners of this 400-year-old cavy likely fed it scraps from the table, the isotope analysis suggested.

Researchers have known from historical texts that domesticated guinea pigs came to Europe soon after explorers made it to the New World. But this find is the first to be radiocarbon dated. Only two other guinea pig skeletons have turned up in archaeological digs in Europe (excluding modern pet graves, of course). One, from the early 1800s, seems to have been used for dissection at the Royal London Hospital. The other, which dates to 1574 or 1575, was found at Hill Hall Manor in Essex, England. That pig had quite the ritzy digs: The owner of the mansion, Thomas Smith, was ambassador to France. His status may have made it easy to get what was then considered an exotic pet.

The spread of the cavy

But the discovery of a piggie pet in a middle-class household around the same time as the other two suggests that, true to their rodent nature, guinea pigs bred and spread quickly in Europe.

"The occurrence of [a] guinea pig in a late 16th century context of a manor at Hill Hall, Essex, owned by a member of the royal court, suggests that it was a prestigious animal," Fabienne Pigi?re of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and colleagues wrote in the upcoming April issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science.

"However, the finds from Mons indicate that the middle class was also able to purchase guinea pigs, which could be related to the rapid spread of this prolific animal after its introduction in Europe, making it accessible to several classes of the population."

Classifying Solar Eruptions ? limitless life

ScienceDaily (Jan. 25, 2012)?? Solar flares are giant explosions on the sun that send energy, light and high speed particles into space. These flares are often associated with solar magnetic storms known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). While these are the most common solar events, the sun can also emit streams of very fast protons ? known as solar energetic particle (SEP) events ? and disturbances in the solar wind known as corotating interaction regions (CIRs). All of these can produce a variety of ?storms? on Earth that can ? if strong enough ? interfere with short wave radio communications, GPS signals, and Earth?s power grid, among other things.

The amount of solar activity increases approximately every 11 years, and the sun is currently moving toward another solar maximum, likely in 2013. That means more flares will be coming, some small and some big enough to send their radiation all the way to Earth.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has devised categories for the flares and various storms. The biggest flares are known as ?X-class flares? based on a classification system that divides solar flares according to their strength. The smallest ones are A-class (near background levels), followed by B, C, M, and X. Similar to the Richter scale for earthquakes, each letter represents a 10-fold increase in energy output. So an X is ten times an M and 100 times a C. Within each letter class there is a finer scale from 1 to 9.

C-class and smaller flares are too weak to noticeably affect Earth. M-class flares can cause brief radio blackouts at the poles and minor radiation storms that might endanger astronauts.

And then come the X-class flares. Although X is the last letter, there are flares more than 10 times the power of an X1, so X-class flares can go higher than 9. The most powerful flare measured with modern methods was in 2003, during the last solar maximum, and it was so powerful that it overloaded the sensors measuring it. The sensors cut out at X15, but the flare was estimated to be as high as an X28.

The biggest X-class flares are by far the largest explosions in the solar system and are awesome to watch. Loops tens of times the size of Earth leap up off the sun?s surface when the sun?s magnetic fields cross over each other and reconnect. In the biggest events, this reconnection process can produce as much energy as a billion hydrogen bombs.

As the sun moves towards its next solar maximum and heats up, we are already seeing an increase in activity. The first X-class flare of the current solar cycle erupted on February 15, 2011, and there were more over the summer. On January 23, 2012, the sun unleashed an M8.7 flare accompanied by a CME and an SEP that created one of the strongest radiation storms since 2005.

If they?re directed at Earth, such flares and associated solar events can create long lasting radiation storms that can harm satellites, communications systems, and even ground-based technologies and power grids. NASA and NOAA ? as well as the US Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) and others ? keep a constant watch on the sun to monitor for X-class flares and their associated magnetic storms. With advance warning many satellites, spacecraft and technologies can be protected from the worst effects.

World factory output curbed by troubled Europe (Reuters)

LONDON/SINGAPORE (Reuters) ? Crumbling global demand restrained factory output in Asia and most of Europe in January, business surveys showed on Wednesday, putting pressure on policymakers to shore up growth and counter a spreading malaise.

Asia's export-reliant countries, while far more resilient, remain vulnerable to the euro zone's messy sovereign debt crisis that threatens at best to tip the currency bloc into a recession and at worst to rip it apart.

Meanwhile, the first rise in German manufacturing output in four months was not enough to offset prolonged contraction in the currency union's smaller economies and suggests that the bloc will not avoid that recession.

"There is an awful long way to go yet, and given the headwinds that these economies face I would be cautious about being too optimistic," said Peter Dixon at Commerzbank.

"Germany continues to motor on and show a reasonable amount of dynamism, and that will drag France along and maybe Italy, but it is not really going to help the likes of Greece. You need much more buoyancy from domestic demand, which at the moment appears to be sadly lacking."

The Eurozone Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), compiled by Markit, rose to 48.8 last month from 46.9, revised up from a flash reading but recording its sixth month below the 50 mark that divides growth from contraction.

French manufacturing contracted again in January, as did major economies Spain and Italy, as well as Greece and Ireland.

Data from Britain was decidedly more upbeat than the figures from continental Europe, showing its manufacturing sector unexpectedly grew in January. The PMI rose to 52.1 from 49.6, easily beating expectations for 50.0.

European stocks jumped and the euro recovered from week lows after the data, with analysts citing the some of the key numbers were better than feared, and that positive combined with hopes that Greece is edging towards a comprehensive deal on restructuring its debt to ease markets' nerves at least momentarily.

The official China PMI inched up to 50.5 in January from 50.3, which was welcome news. But new export orders fell sharply, again underscoring the troubles in Europe.

"As external demand is now fading clearly, Chinese exporters are facing increasing difficulties," China's Finance Minister Xie Xuren said in remarks on Wednesday.

The HSBC Markit PMI for China told the same if slightly more negative tale, holding at 48.8 in January.

"Chinese manufacturing has not yet reached a bottom. The trend so far has been consistent with our view that the current downturn will be shallower but more extended than the last downturn," said Yao Wei at Societe Generale.

Comparable figures due later from the United States, the world's biggest economy, are expected to show an uptick in activity as well. Economists in a Reuters poll expect a rise to 54.5 in the Institute for Supply Management index from 53.1.

The pace of job creation by private employers slowed in January after a sharp gain the month before, a report by a payrolls processor showed on Wednesday.

The private sector added 170,000 jobs last month, the ADP National Employment Report showed, shy of economists' expectations for a gain of 185,000 jobs.

ASIA WAVERING BUT STILL RELATIVELY STRONG

India bucked the gloomy trend, with factory activity growing at its fastest pace in eight months. Unlike most of its Asian peers, India's economy is far less exposed to export demand.

The PMI reading of 57.5 in January marked almost three years of expansion in the manufacturing sector and brought some cheer to an economy hurt by monetary policy tightening and the government's policy paralysis.

South Korea's manufacturing sector activity and new export orders both shrank for a sixth straight month in January, the longest losing streak in three years. And in Taiwan, faltering exports bit into factory activity which shrank for the eighth straight month.

South Korean exports posted a shocking 6.6 percent drop from a year earlier in January, far worse than the 0.7 percent consensus in a Reuters poll. Its exports to the European Union tumbled 45 percent in the first 20 days compared with the same period a year earlier.

Indeed, the euro zone is expected to be in recession during the first half of this year, according to a Reuters poll, but this assumes the debt crisis will not flare out of control.

Fears that Greece could face a disorderly default if it does not quickly secure a debt swap deal with private creditors, or that Portugal might require a second bailout, continue to rattle investors.

On Monday, most European Union states agreed to a German-led pact that will impose quasi-automatic sanctions on countries that breach EU budget deficit limits and will enshrine balanced budget rules in national law. That, however, will not solve euro zone countries' immediate borrowing troubles.
