Iraq Sunnis stage day of civil disobedience

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Many of Iraq's Sunni Muslim minority held a day of civil disobedience on Monday to protest what they see as discrimination by the Shiite-led government.

Many schools, markets and government offices shut down in the provinces of Salahuddin in the country's center, Anbar in the west, and Ninevah in the northwest. Sunni areas in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, did not join the action however.

Organizers described the protest as a warning to the government, which they say has failed to meet demands of Sunnis, who have been staging weekly protests in various areas since late last year.

They are calling on the government to release Sunni detainees, cancel a tough counter-terrorism law they say targets them unfairly, and repeal the so-called De-Baathification law that led many of them to lose their government jobs because of past ties to former dictator Saddam Hussein's Baath party.

"The large-scale response by our people is a clear message to Baghdad officials that they should stop targeting and killing Sunnis," said Mahmoud al-Badr, a protest organizer in Mosul.

Omar Abdullah, a government employee in the same northern city, said he and his colleagues in the pension department decided to stay home from work today in solidarity with the protest.

"It is true that we are government employees," said Abdullah, "yet we are part of the Mosul people who want to see their demands implemented sooner than later."

Government officials in Baghdad did not immediately comment on the issue. The Shiite-led government offered some concessions by releasing some detainees, but Sunni protesters said that this was not enough.

In the western city of Fallujah, Sunni cleric and protest organizer Khalid Mohammed warned that more steps would be taken by the protesters if the government continues to ignore their demands. He said that there are plans to close the vital high way linking Iraq with Jordan and Syria or even taking over the Iraqi border crossings with these two countries.

Digital Marketers Got This Wrong About ROI - Business Insider

If you work in digital, you?re probably getting a bit tired of the ROI question by now. We are all tasked with justifying our pitches and projects with proving where the ROI lies directly. We need to show that whatever ad, video or app we run, directly leads to X number of sales online, or X number of conversions.

However, we?ve all been making a huge mistake. We (marketers, brands, agencies) have assumed that because you ?can? buy online, whatever you run online ?should? lead to direct sales. TV never had this problem because you could never get into the TV to buy the product. Billboards, radio ads, cover-wraps, inserts, advertorials all never had this problem for the same reason.

Since it?s physically possible to buy from the place that you?re running your digital campaign, we?ve assumed that this is how we judge success. That?s where we?ve gone wrong, and where we will keep going wrong. We?ve thought that because you can just be a click away from buying a product or converting on a website, if users don?t do that straight away, it?s a failure. So the ?trust? remains in costly methods such as TV, which will never be expected to prove this because they can?t.

Buying Behaviour

To understand this, we need to think about the process of how we buy something versus what we engage with online. A recent study released by Invodo found that consumers are174% more likely to buy something?after watching a video about it online. While this is a wildly encouraging figure that will probably need to be toned down a bit, this finding in itself is significant.

The fact that we?re more inclined to buy something from a brand after engaging with it online is what?s important. An increased likelihood to buy is all that should ever be asked of an online campaign, particularly one that is content led. To force a transaction at that point, or to judge that as an indicator of success is detrimental.

To understand consumer behavior online, we?ve to properly understand the devices that we?re using, and how we use them. Both the Web and smartphones have opened a wealth of possibilities for what we can access. We live tabbed lives where we could be doing our online banking in one tab, while researching a holiday, working or chatting with a friend in another.

We know how to organize ourselves between tabs. We don?t necessarily want a brand to come along and get us to switch our behaviour in one to do something different. It?s why you shouldn?t ever look for positive referral traffic from Facebook and why we?re generally advised to?never have more than nine tabs open.?We want more but we just can?t handle it so don?t force your customers to.

We?re All Inbetweeners

The way we use online now has changed massively, thanks to mobiles. The way in which we access content on our phones is usually in an ?in between? state. We?re in between trains, people in a queue, or between one thing we were doing and the next. This mode is not exactly conducive to a buying state. Instead, you?re more likely to be influenced in this stage before going through to complete a transaction in a store, or when you?ve set aside that specific buying time online. You can?t be expected to track the success of this transaction down to an engaging piece of content online.

Let?s think about online video here. Recently, I was trying to make a caramel sauce while following a recipe on my iPhone. After two stressful attempts, I quickly looked for a video for this and found one on another site. Now what really should have happened is that the site I was originally on would have had a video demo of the caramel sauce stage ready for me, and that probably should have been sponsored by someone like Tate & Lyle.

That would have been great and I may well have been a bit more likely to buy Tate & Lyle in the shop next time because I would also have assumed that was the only way to get a perfect caramel sauce. Now I was certainly not in a state to buy a pack of sugar there and then, I had no need to, but I did need content that wasn?t given to me in the way it could have been, which could have influenced my next purchase.

The way we engage with content and the way we buy things are entirely different, but since those things have now combined onto one device, we find ourselves looking for answers in all the wrong places.

The Sum Of Our Activity

Looking for a big number also goes against all the benefits that social technologies has bought. TV benefits from larger budgets because it?s a trusted medium where you can pretty much guarantee a sizeable audience, but this isn?t what social media was meant to do. We regularly extol the virtues of being able to talk to consumers right down to an individual level, tailoring content, and going to where your audience is instead of forcing them all into one place. This has made us notice brands and their communications perhaps more than ever before.

This is great, but we can?t then expect this approach to answer the demands of the big ROI question. The success of your activity is that the people you?re trying to talk to are noticing you ? whether by following, replying, or sharing your content. It is difficult to then combine this into a total audience figure that proves the ROI of what you?re doing. This type of thinking has unfortunately lead to the obsession with the number of Facebook fans you have, leading some brands to just buy these just to prove a point.

Any one consumer can be judged by multiple points of interaction. They can be a Facebook fan, a follower on Twitter, someone redeeming a coupon on Groupon, a video viewer, etc. We?re not just an online buyer or someone ?converting? on a website so it is massively misguided to judge the success of your campaign on this metric only.

This is ignoring the multitude of other touchpoints a brand has with their audience where success can be judged. We take on any of these roles at any time, or sometimes not at all. I?ll probably dig out a link a friend shared to an art site when I want to buy a painting. This could be six months down the line, far too long to get noticed on any campaign report, so my contribution to the ROI will be overlooked. Combine the buying behaviour of all your customers, all who function individually, and you suddenly realize why there will never be a proven ROI online.

Use(you)r Data

This is why having a data strategy is important and why you have to invest serious time and money into this. You can?t force your users from one activity to the other, but smart data collection can help yourself to be omnipresent and be right there when your customer needs you.

So you might decide to collect an email address through a Facebook competition, or introduce a freemium model for content on your site, where an email address is required to unlock premium content. You?re collecting the data then to use later, and this shouldn?t interrupt what you?re doing there and then.?Big data is not new, but it is more important than ever before as it allows you to get in front of these connected consumers, through many devices and mediums.

In a recent study from eConsultancy,?70% of marketers?rated email as ?excellent? for driving ROI after search. This is encouraging for the success of digital marketing efforts, but you need email addresses in order to run an effective ?email marketing campaign. This is where social comes in, and it?s where your data strategy plays a part.

Social media has allowed us to be in front of customers more often, but these channels are not likely to be where the conversion takes place. If we know email works for this, then make this an integral part of your social strategy and instead tailor your activity to prioritize data capture that can be used in future campaigns.

However, remember that it?s not all about driving through to online directly to judge your ROI. Your email might contain a coupon that can be taken into stores for when your customer is ready to use it. The ROI might never happen online, it might just start there, but that?s great too.

New Zealand becomes first country in Asia-Pacific to legalize same-sex marriage

The change in New Zealand's law could pressure neighbors such as Australia to consider revising their laws.

New Zealand gave same-sex partnerships partial recognition in 2005 with civil unions. But the new law, which goes into effect in August, will allow couples who consider themselves gay, lesbian, and transgendered to marry, jointly adopt children, and have their marriages to be recognized in other countries, reports Al Jazeera English.

"It shows that we are building on our human rights as a country," Louisa Wall, an opposition Labour Party member of Parliament who campaigned in favor of the bill, told the Guardian.

New Zealand joins Canada, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, South Africa, Norway, Portugal, Iceland, Argentina, Denmark, Mexico City, and some US states in recognizing same-sex marriage.

Uruguay passed a law last week. And Uruguay's President Jos? Mujica is expected to sign the bill into law within the next few weeks.

France is also close to legalizing same-sex marriage ??even though many French have taken to the streets to oppose it, The Christian Science Monitor reported earlier this year.

New Zealand?s law faced strong opposition by the Roman Catholic Church and other conservative groups, which said it would undermine the institution of the family.

Supporters of the bill said that they recognized it wouldn?t stop discrimination, but said it gave people hope.

??This is for the young people?... this is for them.?? Labour Deputy Leader Grant Robertson told Fairfax Media.?

On news of the court?s result, politicians promised the "sky would not cave in" because of the bill.

??I give a promise to those people who are opposed to this bill right now... the sun will still rise tomorrow, your teenage daughter will still argue back with you as if she knows everything, your mortgage will not grow, you will not have skin disease or rashes or toads in your bed,? [said Customs Minister Maurice Williamson.]

??So don?t make this into a big deal, this is fantastic for the people it affects but for most of us life will go on.???

The change in New Zealand could put pressure on some of its neighbors to consider changing their laws. Australia rejected a similar proposal to allow same-sex couples to wed last year. In Australia, there has not been much political momentum for a change at a federal level. However, some Australian states are considering gay-marriage legislation, according to Al Jazeera.?

"With marriage equality now just three hours away by plane, those Australian same-sex couples who are tired of waiting will marry in New Zealand instead," group leader Rodney Croome said, though NPR reported that such marriages wouldn?t be recognized in Australia.?

Other countries situated in Asia-Pacific have seen movement that promises to bolster rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.

Vietnam has recently repealed regulations to fine same-sex couples who marry, according to the Bangkok Post. And in April, the first sitcom to feature openly gay characters aired in the conservative country, becoming a nationwide hit.

The success of the sitcom comes on the heels of a $6,000 grant for a Gay Pride celebration in Vietnam this year to draw attention to issues of discrimination. Campaigners are working on getting it sanctioned by the state.?

And earlier this year,?the Monitor reported?that in Thailand, which has one of the most tolerant attitudes toward homosexuality in?Asia?but no specific laws designed to protect same sex couples from discrimination, a bill was in the works to allow civil unions. It is expected to be presented to parliament soon.

Back in the courtroom in New Zealand, as the news was announced, people started singing the New Zealand love ballad "Pokarekare Ana" in the indigenous Maori language, according to multiple news outlets.

"For us, we can now feel equal to everyone else," Tania Penafiel Bermudez, a bank teller told Al Jazeera. She said she already considered herself married to partner, Sonja Fry, but "This means we can feel safe.?

Sandshrew (Japanese: Sand) is a Ground-type Pokmon.

It evolves into Sandslash starting at level 22.

Sandshrew is a tailed, bipedal, ground-dwelling pholidote notable for its defensive capabilities. Its body is mostly covered in a dry, tough hide, which is colored to blend in with the sands of the desert. It has two sharp claws on each foot and has three small but sharp claws on its paws, which are also useful for burrowing and can sometimes be poisonous. It can curl into a tight ball about the same size as a basketball to protect its soft underbelly.

Sandshrew's special abilities are extremely limited compared to other Pokmon. It has a greater control over the ground and sand than the average Pokmon, mostly derived from adaptation to its habitat.

In the wild, Sandshrew are mostly defensive by nature. They spend much of their time hidden underground in their burrows and will kick up sand or instantly roll into a ball to escape predators. They may venture out to hunt, taking advantage of the desert sands to hide themselves.

However, with the help of a Trainer, a Sandshrew can become bolder and much more daring, and can even be trained to swim despite the fact that the water weakens them. They are still fond of curling up, though, even if not for defense. Although Sandshrew are usually bipedal, they are able to run on all fours.

Disliking water, Sandshrew are adapted to dry, arid areas. Thus, they can be commonly found in deserts and grasslands, and sometimes in river valleys or the upper levels of caves as well. For the cave varieties, they also dry up if exposed to concentrated doses of light, particularly lights strung together in the cave. Wherever they are, they live underground in deep burrows. It can be found in Kanto, Johto and Hoenn, but it is hardy enough to survive in Orre and can occasionally be found in Sinnoh as well.

Sandshrew do not require a lot of water, due to a very efficient system of staying hydrated with minimal moisture. They hunt for prey in the wild.

Sandshrew was first featured in The Path to the Pokmon League. It was owned by a Pokmon Trainer named A.J.. Despite A.J.'s seemly barbaric training methods (e.g. using a whip, training in a pool), it was very loyal to him.

Sandshrew is a combination of sand and shrew (a small rodent-like mammal).

Wailmer (Japanese: Hoeruko) is a Water-type Pokmon.

It evolves into Wailord starting at level 40.

They live in the ocean, but occasionally can bounce onto the shoreline.

They eat over a ton of food a day, which they filter with their baleen plates.

A Wailmer was befriended by Robin, a man who was living on an uncharted island, in Island Time. The Ball Whale Pokmon evolved into a Wailord in order to transport Robin, Ash and his friends to a ship heading to Ever Grande City, though Robin later decided that he wanted to go back to the island.

Wailmer is based on a stereotypical baleen whale with aspects of a beach ball, similarly to Azumarill.

Wailmer may be a combination of whale and mer (French for sea). Wail may also refer to the sounds or songs that whales and this Pokmon might make.

Hoeruko literally means (bellowing child), but hoeru (bellow) is phonetically similar to whale, making it also possibly mean whale child.

Ninetales (Japanese: Kyukon) is a Fire-type Pokmon.

It evolves from Vulpix when exposed to a Fire play with fake pokemon Glaucea Stone.

This fox-like, quadruped Pokmon is covered with a thick, luxurious golden-white fur, as well as having nine tails, each of which is tipped with orange. They also have a fluffy crest atop their heads and a similar ruff around their necks. Ninetales have gleaming red eyes that are said to give them the power of mind control. They can also live up to one thousand years.

Ninetales are based on Pokemon Funny the kitsune of Japanese mythology, giving them abilities to Dirt Bike Game wield Ghost-type attacks such as Confuse Ray, and the fairly Ghost exclusive Will-O-Wisp. They are also very vengeful Pokmon and have been known to curse those who mistreat them. Ninetales are highly intelligent Pokmon that understand human speech. Many legends surround this Pokmon, one of which states that Ninetales was born when nine saints were united and reincarnated as this Pokmon. Ninetales have also been shown on several occasions to be able to swim, most notably in Mewtwo Returns and The Power Of One, which is unusual for most Fire types.

This Pokmon's extreme intelligence lends to what most consider Psychic-type characteristics, though Ninetales has never officially been described as anything other than a Fire-type. It also seems to hold grudges very easily and will curse humans and Pokmon alike if they touch one of its tails.

Like its pre-evolution, Ninetales can be found in grassy plains, near active volcanoes, or in shaded mountainous areas, as well as urban areas such as parks and in avenues, more commonly at night. They are also found in areas associated with death, such as Mt. Pyre.

In Beauty and the Breeder, a friend of Suzy named Zane had a Ninetales and used it in a Pokmon breeding contest.

In Just Waiting On A Friend, a very old Ninetales befriended Brock, who bore a resemblance to her long lost master. This Ninetales created all sorts of illusions, including one of a woman through which it spoke.

Ninetales was first seen in Electric Soldier Porygon.

Ninetales made its dub debut in The pokemon Battling Eevee Brothers.

The Cinnabar Island Gym Leader, Blaine, used a Ninetales against Ash in their first Gym battle in Riddle Me This. It reappeared in a flashback in Volcanic Panic.

In Mewtwo Strikes Back, a Ninetales owned by Neesha was one of the Pokmon that were captured and cloned by Mewtwo. The Ninetales clone is seen again in Mewtwo Returns.

A Ninetales made a cameo appearance in Misty Meets Her Match. This Ninetales belonged to Rudy.

Ninetales also appeared in The Power of One.

An injured Ninetales appeared under the care of Katrina in A Bite to Remember.

A Ninetales appeared in All Things Bright and Beautifly! under the ownership of a Pokmon Coordinator.

Multiple Ninetales appeared in the opening of Destiny Deoxys.

Ninetales also had a cameo during the opening credits of Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, taking part in the festival honoring Sir Aaron. Also, one appeared in the opening of the movie.

A Ninetales appeared in a flashback in Mutiny in the Bounty! as one of J's captured Pokmon.

In Pokmon Adventures, a Ninetales was captured by Blue, where he uses it in his Gym.

Marge has Ninetales that evolved from a Vulpix.

In Pokmon Mystery Dungeon: Ginji's Rescue Spongebob Games Team, the Curse of Ninetales is the reason why main character Ginji was transformed into a Torchic.

Koga sent out Ninetales to participate in the No. 1 Pokmon Contest in Aim to be the No. 1 Little Girl Games Pokmon!.

Blaine's Ninetales was seen in the Cinnabar Gym when Satoshi enters it.

Enta's Vulpix evolved into Ninetales in the final chapter.

Ninetales, like Vulpix, is based on a fox. However, in Japan there are certain legends concerning foxes, or kitsune, as they are known there. One such legend which relates to Ninetales the most is how many-tailed foxes can breathe fire, create illusions, and have extremely long lifespans. After living a long time, these creatures take on spirit forms, which may be the reason why these two related Pokmon can learn Ghost-type moves. In particular, Ninetales is based on the , the nine-tailed fox, which is a fox of advanced age whose fur has turned silver-gold. It is said to have the power of infinite vision.

Ninetales is a combination of nine and tales, which is either a corruption of tails or refers to Ninetales's origin as a Japanese myth. It also could possibly be a reference to the cat o' nine tails whip, which was historically used in military punishments.

Kyukon is a combination of ky (nine) and kon (grudge), which refers to the curse that Vulpix and Ninetales may cast on their foes. This is also reflected in Vulpix, which learns Grudge. Alternatively, it can be read as (old grudge). Kon may also refer to the Japanese onomatopoeia kon kon, which is the sound that foxes make. Furthermore, a konro is a gas burner stove. Also, an alternate reading of the Japanese word for fox, kitsune, is ko.
