Go the hairdo??? ?When thinking about what I was going to write about for this week?s blog I thought I would like to inquire about ?What you have accomplished that you are proud of?? ?We spend so much time focused on what we wish to achieve in the future but often times we do not spend much time acknowledging ourselves for what we have achieved to date!
For eight years I had ?Cory Everson? on my fridge ? she was a pioneer in women?s body sculpting back in the early 80?s ? I struggled with weight loss for over 20 years and I may as well have been 20 stone overweight for what I thought about myself. ?Tried every diet, nutritionist, diet tablet, hair analysis, you name it. ?I am all for positive reinforcement and affirmation, but looking back it was like purgatory looking at that photo every day, wishing, hoping, wanting.
In 2004 I competed in a body sculpting competition and came second ? I got down to 8% body fat on stage, an extraordinary achievement but although I had transformed myself physically I had not behaviorally ? I had achieved the ?10 physique? but it still wasn?t IT yet! ?I look back at that time now and think, ?where was I????It was a powerful lesson for me at the time. ?The things we think we want, that we think we can never achieve, and then we achieve them still do not make the grade ? which seems so ludicrous! ?I have trousers in my wardrobe that I could not fit my one thigh into now ? gotta laugh, don?t you ? man I have lived life at opposite extremes, but I do own that I am an extremist!
What I was proud of on reflection, more than anything, given a lifetime of self-hatred, self-loathing, I learnt to achieve something I never thought I could achieve, self-love.
Now having facilitated 1000?s of coaching conversations around what people wish to achieve, I make sure I affirm for people that the importance of shifting psychologically ? the perception that the achievement of the goal itself will give them the satisfaction, 9 times out of 10 it does not. ?I find this fascinating.
Body sculpting was not just about watching what you eat and fitness, it involved a choreographed routine and body posing in extreme high heels shoes ? if the discipline around the diet and fitness was not enough, getting your head around posing in front of mirrors for hours on end / contorting your body into weird positions / learning to dance and express yourself whilst wearing next to nothing, boy it took something!
I learnt so much during my body sculpting journey that applies to life really:-
1. ?Being my word beyond my current comprehension of what ?being ones word? means
2. ?You can achieve something that you do not think you can achieve if you train your mind to think beyond the constraints of what it thinks is possible
3. ?You can do more than you think you can if you believe it enough
4. ?With the right support you can not only achieve your goal, you can exceed your goal
5. ?The power of the mind ? 2 hours cardio in the morning and 2 hours cardio in the afternoon ? were there days when I did not wish to train, you bet, but did I, yes ? I learnt to do what I said I would do that day and in so doing achieved the end result ? if I had sold out to the power of the mind, I know I would not have achieved the end result
6. ?1 week out from competing, my personal trainer said I could not compete for I could not nail the choreographed routine ? man I was miffed! ?I was SO confronted in expressing myself through dance, this was so foreign to me at the time for I had hid my body for so many years ? even went 3 winters without seeing a summer because summer meant you had to wear less clothes, god the things we do to ourselves?so the learning? ?You can overcome anything when you are pushed to the limit of your beliefs, I could not, not compete, the end goal propelled me to get over myself and nail the routine
7. ?Accepting compliments was something that I did not do well prior to this experience. ?I would always deflect a compliment. ?1 week out from competing I remember walking into a cafe, I was trialing out wearing the 6 inch high heel shoes, in a mini skirt with a skimpy tank top, tanned as ? I walked to the counter and a guy came up to me and said ? ?Do you have any idea how amazing you look? ? at the time, looking the best I have ever looked I thought ?Is this man taking the piss?? literally ? how sad is that?
8. The power discipline has to experiencing freedom. ?I never associated Discipline with Freedom, quite the contrary, I had it looking the complete opposite
9. ?Achieving a goal that you never thought you could achieve, and then achieve, does not give you the happiness that you thought it would ? unless you shift your beliefs and behaviors as well
10. ?Climbing your Everest, that insurmountable mountain that you never thought you could climb, and then you climb it, who are you in that identity? ?Achieving transformational results is ?life altering? for you learn what it is like to achieve beyond the norm
Now 8 years on I am back in training. ?Whether I compete again or not, is yet to be seen ? I am the happiest I have ever been and my relationship to myself is no longer defined by my body weight. ?Don?t get me wrong I love looking good but it no longer has me, which is beyond freeing. ?I am enjoying being back in training and my goal is to be back to my ideal weight by Christmas, as my Christmas present to myself ? my natural approach is to normally do rip, shit and bust training but as I am older and wiser I am pacing myself, I am wanting to sustain this time round, I get there is nowhere to get, I am whole and complete now ? I do not need to prove anything to myself. ?I have already done that!? And some. ?But there is something to be said to being in shape and honoring the vessel ? I have allowed my commitment to my businesses to encroach on my personal boundaries and get moving forward that my personal boundaries need to be non-negotiable.
So I leave you with the thought today:
What have you accomplished that you are proud of?
