Recreation & Sport: The Joy of Fly Fishing in New Brunswick

Finally Got To See A Musky Up Close, Thanks Casey

herring at gagetown boat launchMany moons ago, back when I was about 20, I was with friends at their parent's cottage for a few days of vacation. I love being around water so early one morning while everyone was still fast asleep I walked to the end of their dock to enjoy the sunrise.

Something in the water to my left caught my attention. I stood up so I could get a better look and saw three huge musky swimming in my direction. They pasted so close to me I could have spit on them. That was the only time I've every seen musky, other than on in a picture or on TV.

Casey and I weren't on the water more than 15 minutes and Casey had a fish on. At first we thought it was maybe a pickerel but at closer examination we realized it was a musky. I finally had the opportunity to look at a musky up close.

I have to admit that I thought it would have fought harder but maybe it was the heat or maybe, just maybe, they don't fight so hard when they are only 7 inches long. Ha Ha
