Kenyon Martin parts ways with Chinese club; NBA return not imminent

Kenyon Martin is no longer with the Xinjiang Guanghui Flying Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association, but he will not be able to play in the NBA until he receives a letter of clearance from FIBA, which won?t happen until the team?s season is over, Yahoo! Sports reports.

The CBA instituted a rule this season prohibiting out-clauses in contracts with NBA players. Based on this report, FIBA is holding players to that rule. The Chinese league?s playoffs run into March, so that?s the earliest Martin is expected to be back in the NBA.

Martin has failed to meet expectations in China, averaging 14 points and seven rebounds, and his departure is ?simply a chance to end a partnership that hadn?t been productive,? according to Yahoo!

The power forward played his last seven NBA seasons with the Denver Nuggets. He will be an unrestricted free agent when he returns to the league.

J.R. Smith and Wilson Chandler are also in China and are understood to want to leave the country. Even if they?re let of their contracts, though, they too would be unable to return to the NBA until their respective Chinese teams? seasons end, at least if the rule is applied in the same manner it is with Martin.

Aaron Brooks, meanwhile, plans on finishing his season with Guandong and may re-sign with the Phoenix Suns in March.
