Syrian air force joins battle for Aleppo

ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - The Syrian military stepped up its campaign to drive rebel fighters out of Aleppo on Monday, firing artillery and mortars while a fighter jet flew over a district the army said it had retaken the day before.

However, opposition activists denied government forces had entered Salaheddine, in the southwest of Syria's biggest city.

Hospitals and makeshift clinics in rebel-held eastern neighborhoods were filling up with casualties from a week of fighting in Aleppo, an commercial hub that had previously stayed out of a 16-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

"Some days we get around 30, 40 people, not including the bodies," said a young medic in one clinic. "A few days ago we got 30 injured and maybe 20 corpses, but half of those bodies were ripped to pieces. We can't figure out who they are."

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 18 people were killed in the Aleppo area on Sunday out of more than 150 people, two thirds of them civilians, slain across Syria.

Outgunned rebel fighters, patrolling in flat-bed trucks flying green-white-and-black "independence" flags, said they were holding out in Salaheddine despite a battering by the army's heavy weapons and helicopter gunships.

"We always knew the regime's grave would be Aleppo," said Mohammed, a young fighter, fingering the bullets in his tattered brown ammunition vest. "Damascus is the capital, but here we have a fourth of the country's population and the entire force of its economy. Bashar's forces will be buried here."

An unidentified Syrian army officer said on state television late on Sunday that troops had pushed "those mercenary gunmen" completely out of Salaheddine, adding: "In a few days safety and security will return to the city of Aleppo."

EMPTY STREETS

The army's assault on Salaheddine echoed its tactics in Damascus earlier this month when it used its overwhelming firepower to mop up rebel fighters district by district.

Assad's forces are determined not to let go of Aleppo, where defeat would be a serious strategic and psychological blow.

Military experts believe the rebels are too lightly armed and poorly commanded to overcome the army, whose artillery pounds the city at will and whose gunships control the skies.

Reuters journalists in Aleppo have been unable to approach Salaheddine to verify who controls it.

"Yesterday they were shelling the area at a rate of two shells a minute. We couldn't move at all," said an opposition activist, calling himself a spokesman for the "Aleppo Revolution" group.

"It's not true at all that the regime's forces are in Salaheddine. They didn't cross the bridge into Salaheddine from Hamadaniyah."

Warfare has stilled the usual commercial bustle in this city of 2.5 million. Vegetable markets are open but few people are buying. Instead, crowds of sweating men and women wait nearly three hours to buy limited amounts of heavily subsidized bread.

Rebel fighters, many of them from rural areas near Aleppo, still remain in control of swathes of the city, moving around those areas armed with assault rifles and dressed in items of camouflage clothing in an edgy show of confidence.

They were emboldened to strike at Aleppo and Damascus after a July 18 explosion that killed four of Assad's top security officials in a damaging blow at the president's inner circle.

Government forces have reimposed their grip on the capital and are now intent on denying Aleppo to the rebel Free Syrian Army, whose checkpoints in some districts fly the black and white banners of Islamist militants.

With big powers divided, the outside world has been unable to restrain Syria's slide into civil war.

France said it would ask for an urgent meeting of the U.N. Security Council to try and break the diplomatic deadlock on Syria, but gave no indication that Russia and China would end their longstanding policy of blocking measures against Assad.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Sunday attacks on Aleppo were putting the nail in the coffin of Assad's government, showing he lacks the legitimacy to rule.

"If they continue this kind of tragic attack on their own people in Aleppo, I think it ultimately will be a nail in Assad's own coffin," Panetta told reporters.

The deputy police chief of Syria's western Latakia city defected and fled to Turkey overnight with 11 other Syrian officers, a Turkish official said on Monday, adding that another 600 Syrians had arrived in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of Syrian refugees in Turkey to around 43,500.

AFTERMATH OF BATTLE

The United Nations humanitarian chief said 200,000 people had fled Aleppo, only 50 km (30 miles) from the Turkish border, in two days. It was not clear how this estimate had been reached given the difficulties of assessing relief needs in war zones.

"Many people have sought temporary shelter in schools and other public buildings in safer areas. They urgently need food, mattresses and blankets, hygiene supplies and drinking water," said Valerie Amos, the U.N. official.

Cars entering one Aleppo district came under fire from snipers on Sunday and a Reuters photographer saw three bodies lying in the street. Unable to move them to hospital for fear of shelling, residents had placed frozen water bottles on two of the corpses to slow their decomposition in the baking heat.

A charred tank lay in the street. Another had been captured and covered in tarpaulin. Burnt cars could be seen elsewhere, some marked "shabbiha" - a reference to pro-Assad militiamen.

Syria's foreign minister also declared victory on Sunday in the battle for Damascus.

"Today I tell you, Syria is stronger ... In less than a week they were defeated (in Damascus) and the battle failed," Walid Moualem said on a visit to Iran, Assad's closest ally. "So they moved on to Aleppo and I assure you, their plots will fail."

Assad's ruling system is dominated by his minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, while his opponents are mostly from Syria's Sunni Muslim majority.

The sectarian element in the conflict has raised fears that it could inflame Sunni-Shi'ite tensions elsewhere, particularly in Iraq, Lebanon, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures as high as 110 degrees and a high danger of wildfire in Arkansas.

Forecasters say humidity is expected to drop below 30 percent Monday across the state, making it easier for fires to start.

Also, forecasters say a cool front is approaching from the north and southwest winds ahead of the front will help fires spread more easily. Some thunderstorms are possible.

A heat advisory is in effect for all of Arkansas. The hottest temperatures are expected west of a line from Camden to Stuttgart.

Burn bans are in place for 60 of Arkansas' 75 counties.

The Arkansas Forestry Commission has upgraded the fire danger to extreme for most of the state.

Apple reveals 'Purple' phone prototype in court filing, to prove it didn't copy Sony

The previous batch of sketches revealed during Apple v Samsung suggested the iPhone may have actually borrowed ideas from Sony, but a new filing goes back even further into history to show that's not the case. The Verge spotted that the latest raft of paperwork includes a "Purple" prototype [above left] that was made around August 2005 and bears several hallmarks of the iPhone that finally appeared. The Sony-styled prototypes came later, and were apparently just an "enjoyable side project." AllThingsD has also drawn together around 100 prototypes from Apple's deposition, which offers some interesting insights into what the iPhone could have looked like.

Cheesecake Factory 2Q earns rise 15 percent

CALABASAS HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Restaurant operator Cheesecake Factory Inc. reported a 15 percent increase in second-quarter earnings Wednesday on the strength of improved sales in its namesake chain.

Results topped Wall Street's expectations and the stock climbed in after-hours trading.

Net income for the April-through-June period was $28.4 million, or 52 cents per share, up from $24.7 million, or 42 cents per share, in the second quarter of 2011.

Excluding proceeds from a variable life insurance contract, the company said adjusted income was 51 cents per share.

Revenue was $454.7 million, up 6 percent from $430.7 million a year earlier.

Analysts were expecting earnings of 49 cents per share on revenue of $457 million, according to FactSet.

The company said comparable sales ? those from restaurants open more than a year ? were up 2.1 percent from a year earlier at The Cheesecake Factory but down 2.9 percent at its Grand Lux Cafe chain.

Cheesecake Factory, which runs 173 restaurants nationwide, also said its board approved the initiation of quarterly dividend. The first dividend of 12 cents per share will be paid Aug. 21 to shareholders of record Aug. 8.

Shares in the company jumped $1.87, or 6.2 percent, to $32 in after-hours trading following the release of the earnings report. In the regular session, they declined 6 cents to $30.38.

Italian Stuffed Meat Loaf - The Self Improvement Blog

Meatloaf gets flair with this moist, Italian-flavored meatloaf stuffed with cheese, spinach, and roasted red peppers. It will turn anyone into a meat loaf fan.

Ingredients

2 pounds ground sirloin
1 large egg white
1 cup tomato juice
Salt and pepper to taste
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
1 onion, chopped
4 ounces sliced part-skim Mozzarella or provolone cheese
1/2 cup frozen spinach, cooked according to directions and squeezed dry
1/2 cup jarred roasted red peppers, drained and chopped
Instructions

1. Preheat oven 350?F. Coat 9x5x3-inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray.
2. In large bowl, combine meat, egg white, tomato juice, salt and pepper, garlic, and oregano.
3. In small nonstick skillet coated with nonstick cooking spray, saut? onion until tender. Add cooked onion to meat mixture, mixing well. Put half meat mixture into prepared loaf pan and layer with Mozzarella cheese, spinach, and red peppers, cover with remaining meat mixture. Bake meat loaf one hour or until meat is done.

To Freeze: Cool to room temperature, then wrap, label, and freeze.

What happens to the iPod touch in a post-iPad mini world?

When iMore first heard that Apple was going ahead with the 7-inch iPad this fall, and at a ~$200 price point, one of the first things we asked was -- what does that mean for the iPod touch?

The rise of the iPod touch

Apple launched the iPod touch in September of 2007, only a few short months after the original iPhone shipped. It was even more limited than the pre-App Store iPhone, and didn't even include basic internet apps like Mail, but it did provide a slightly lower-priced point of entry for iOS.

In January of 2008 Apple added those internet apps to the iPod touch -- for a price -- and in June of the same year, it got iPhone OS 2.0 and the App Store. The rest, as they say, is history.

Apple updated the iPod touch hardware in the fall of 2008, and again in the falls of 2009 and 2010. Year after year, the iPod touch hardware kept pace with the iPhone hardware, adding new chipsets, gyroscopes, FaceTime cameras, and Retina displays as the iPhone added them.

Then, in 2011, the iPod touch hardware was not updated. It got a new color -- a white option -- but that was it. No new chipset, no new optics.

The fall of the iPod market

Apple's iPod business had been shrinking for a while now. Apple sold 15.4 million iPods in Q1, 2012, down from 19 million in Q1, 2011. Apple maintains that the iPod touch accounts for roughly 50% of iPod sales, but 50% of 15.4 million is still less than 50% of 19 million.

The iPad, released in 2010, likely played some part in that. Though more expensive, it also offered a bigger screen and, for some things, a better experience. The $0 iPhone 3GS, released in 2011, may have also been a factor. Though it lacked a Retina display, the lower up-front cost might have convinced more people to more quickly make the leap from iPod to iPhone.

Yet, to this day, the iPod touch remains the cheapest overall way to access the App Store, and one of the most popular portable gaming platforms on the market. Starting at just $200, with no cellular contracts -- indeed, not even the option for cellular data -- its perfect for kids, for joggers, for developers, for those who want a phone other than the iPhone but still want access to iOS, and for those who simply want a tiny, app-centric tablet for home, travel, or work.

The iPod touch in an iPad mini world

With an iPad mini not only rumored to be coming, but rumored to be coming at the same $200 base price the iPod touch currently enjoys, where would that leave the iPod touch then in the lineup?

Apple has several options:

• Cancel the iPod touch. This would replace the iPod touch with the iPad mini as the entry-level iOS device, and keep the product matrix cleaner and simpler.
• Keep the 2010 iPod touch on the market. This makes it the pocketable alternative at the same price, or the budget, iPod shuffle option at an even lower price.
• Introduce a new, 2012 iPod touch. This brings it back up to spec with the rumored 4-inch, 16:9 iPhone 5 and increases its value proposition at the same price.

Let's take them in order.

Canceling the iPod touch

As far as iMore has heard, Apple isn't canceling the iPod touch or replacing it with the iPad mini, at least not yet. Unless we heard wrong -- and it doesn't seem like it so far -- there will still be an iPod touch on the shelves when the iPod mini joins it.

Keeping the 2010 iPod touch on the market

If the iPod mini hits store shelves at $200 or $250, it makes it seem harder for Apple to sell a 2-year old iPod touch for $200. Even though miniaturization can be expensive, and ultra-portability can be a feature, for many customers smaller is synonymous with cheaper.

Apple could try to offset this with more cosmetic changes -- add "nanochromatic" color options like the iPod nano and iPod shuffle enjoy -- to increase the perceived value, but even that might leave the iPod touch as a tough sell compared to the bigger iPod mini.

Apple could drop the price to $150, perhaps less. But the current bill of goods for the lowest end iPod touch 4 is probably just under $150. If Apple can't reduced that to less than $100 or so, and you take into account manufacturing, transport, and other associated costs, they won't sell it for under $200. They're not Amazon or Google. They don't sell hardware at or below cost.

If Apple wants an even lower priced iOS device on the market, and they can get production costs down enough, this is an option. It just doesn't seem like a likely one at this point.

(Apple has announced that the current iPod touch will be iOS 6 compatible, like all current generation iOS devices they sell. Take that as you wish.)

Introducing a new iPod touch

There was no new iPod touch hardware in 2011, so Apple could certainly introduce an all-new, radically improved iPod touch in 2012. If it includes the new internals from the iPhone 5, and the rumored new 4-inch, 16:9 screen, then it will be seem as an even bigger hardware revision than it might have otherwise been.

The iPad mini will be perceived as all new hardware, and the best way to give the iPod touch a fighting chance at the same or similar price point, is to give it all new hardware as well.

If Apple wants to keep iOS as a premium brand, at least relative to the greater iPod line, then an all-new iPod touch 5 seems like the best option.

Conclusion

The iPod touch may get updated and stand its ground, dollar-for-dollar with the iPad mini, or it might stay around as a legacy device like the iPod classic, or it might stay get even cheaper and become the iPod shuffle of the iOS line. Potentially, Apple could even introduce a new iPod touch at the same price and keep the older one around at a cheaper price.

iMore hasn't heard what Apple plans to do with the iPod touch line yet, but we did hear a couple months ago that the iPod touch line wasn't going anywhere.

And that's certainly good news for kids, for joggers, for developers, for those who want a phone other than the iPhone but still want access to iOS, and for those who simply want a tiny, app-centric tablet for home, travel, or work.

Autopsies performed on victims of Bulgaria attack

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) ? Autopsies have provided officials with new information about the suicide bomber who killed five vacationing Israelis and a Bulgarian bus driver in the Black Sea resort town of Burgas, an official said Sunday.

But the identity of the attacker appeared to remain unknown, and Bulgaria's government was continuing to investigate whether he had carried out the attack with the help of an accomplice.

Israel has blamed Wednesday's attack in Bulgaria, and other recent ones on its citizens around the world, on Iran and its proxy groups, including Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran has denied responsibility.

Israel has asked other countries in Europe to increase security in the bus parking lots used by Israelis and at airports, and Bulgarian police have responded by stepping up security at their country's airports. From now on, all flights arriving from Israel will not be publicly announced, and Israeli passengers will be kept in a separate and secure area, officials said Sunday.

"The state of Israel is responsible for its citizens wherever they are," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a Cabinet meeting in Jerusalem on Sunday. "We will continue to fight against terrorism, against the perpetrators and those who dispatch them."

Bulgaria's government released no new information over the weekend about its ongoing investigation into the bombing in Burgas, which is about 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of the capital, Sofia. The attack occurred shortly after the Israelis boarded a bus outside the airport in Burgas, a popular tourist destination for Israeli tourists.

However, Dr. Galina Mleva, a forensic expert who took part in autopsies on the victims and the attacker, told Bulgarian National TV on Sunday that the bomber did not meet the description of some witnesses, raising the possibility that they had seen an accomplice. Mileva said the bomber "had a white face, light eyes, and very thick brown hair. The facial bones were shattered in the explosion."

On Friday, district prosecutor Kalina Tchapkanova cited witness reports that the suspect had dark eyes.

Evidence gathered during the attack and several days before it have raised questions about whether the bomber was working alone or with an accomplice.

Security camera footage just before the attack showed the suspected bomber wandering in and out of the bus terminal in Burgas, wearing a baseball cap over long hair, a T-shirt and plaid shorts. His bulky backpack was packed with TNT powder. Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov told reporters last week the bomber was believed to have been about 36 years old and had been in the country between four to seven days.

Bulgarian prosecutors have said a man tried to rent a car in the days before the bombing but was turned down because his ID appeared suspicious. Authorities have examined his fingerprints, his DNA and his fake Michigan driver's license. They also said the man actually had short hair. It was not clear if he was wearing a wig, or if this was a different person from the bomber.

Afrodita Petrova, the owner of the car rental company, told Bulgarian National TV that the suspect had short dark hair when visiting the office. She said he was the same person from the video camera footage and appeared to be wearing a wig.

"He spoke English with an Arab accent," she said.

It started a trend of dialing down the glitz factor and upping the grit factor. James Bond?s been ?Bourne-ified,? for example. He wears fewer black ties but gets more black eyes.

So what?s that got to do with Batman? The thing about Batman?s brand of super-heroism is that he?s got no actual super-powers. He?s got super-money that buys super-gadgets that function as super-powers. Batman is human. Batman is perfect for Bourne-ification. How do you ?Bourne-ify? Thor?s magic hammer? Exactly.

It takes itself fairly seriously. Should it? It?s Bourne-ified, but it?s still a comic book, and a comic is by nature?fluff. Gritty fluff, anyone?

When last we saw The Dark Knight, aka Batman, aka Bruce Wayne, he had nixed his adversary Harvey Dent, aka Two Face. The public was unaware that Two Face was really a demon, and so the ?Dent Act? was enacted, putting a massive dent in criminal activity in Gotham City, and thus putting Batman out of business. So the Dark Knight?s been slumming around, depressed and unmotivated, with a bum knee, for eight long years.

Enter Anne Hathaway as a slinky cat burglar (Cough! Catwoman. Cough!) who burgles the bat-safe with such va-va-voom ingenuity that the Batman gets a tad hot and bothered. He starts to think maybe he should get out more.

Then, a hulking new terrorist-y villain, Bane (Tom Hardy in a minimized Darth Vader mask), starts wreaking havoc in Gotham. He trashes the stock exchange, does a sort of storming of the Bastille, and apparently gives the city to the 99 percent. So now, of course, Batman?s simply got to come out of retirement.

Morgan Freeman?s character Lucius is to Batman what Q is to James Bond?he demonstrates the new toys. There?re some old gizmos like The Tumbler (a motorcycle), an excellent new gadget that immediately kills paparazzi cameras dead, and a cool new airborne gizmo called?wait for it ? The Bat.

It?s a convoluted plot that goes on for nearly three hours. Someone?s been pouring concrete laced with explosives all over Gotham, the bridges are blown, there?s no escape. There?s an unstable thermonuclear bomb somewhere, meant to ruin the newly found hope of the 99 percent. Bane is a mean man who knows hope exacerbates torture.

Batman motorcycles and hovercrafts around, acting as a sort of caped Jack Bauer (of the Fox Network show ?24?), running a counterterrorist unit of big bat-weapons, attempting to foil Bane and his bomb. There are lots of serious, emotional lectures by Alfred, who is concerned with Bruce?s billionaire-to-bum slide. He wants for him to be happy.

There are some good lines. The doctor examining Batman?s trashed knee quips, ?You have exactly no cartilage in your knee, therefore this medical office will certainly not condone any heli-skiing.?

When Batman looks away for a split second and Catwoman vanishes into thin air, he says, ?So that?s what that feels like.?

There?s definitely a boredom factor amid the three hours of bombast. As mentioned, ?The Dark Knight Rises? tries to be very dark and serious. The problem is, that comic-book rubber-headed costume just looks sort of, well, comical, when things get too realistic.

It?s an all-star cast, heavy hitters all. Everybody can act up a storm, any bat-time, any bat-place. Problem is, every movie nowadays is a comic book or a cartoon. What are we doing? What are we watching lately? Gritty fluff, that?s what.

The International Franchise Association and the Consumer Bankers Association today unveiled the Franchise Small Business Lending Accelerator, a new tool to expedite small business loans to the franchise sector. The Lending Accelerator has been incorporated into the Franchise Registry website www.franchiseregistry.com?and will provide both SBA and conventional lenders with powerful new capabilities such as detailed underwriting information on more than 3,000 franchise brands and lender business development tools to find suitable franchise brands and franchisees

The Lending Accelerator tool was developed in collaboration between members of the IFA and CBA as part of a private-sector campaign to educate both the financial services industry about franchise lending and franchise borrowers about the challenges facing banks in a new regulatory environment. ?The Accelerator will alter the way franchise lending is done, increasing the flow of capital to franchising and leading to much-needed growth in the small business community,? said President and CEO Steve Caldeira during a preview of the new tool IFA hosted for members of IFA, CBA and the media. . ?For the past 18 months we have worked together to address capital access issue, responding to our members first with a lending summit in April 2011.??

Richard Hunt, President and CEO of the Consumer Bankers Association knows from a lending perspective that the last four years have been challenging for banks looking to make good loans to qualified borrowers.? US regulators took a step into the unknown this week when they approved the first drug to prevent HIV infection. US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Margaret Hamburg hailed the pill, Truvada, as a tool for reducing the rate of infection in the United States, where 50,000 people are diagnosed each year. But the drug combines low doses of two anti?retroviral agents normally used to treat infection, and some researchers fear that its use in healthy people could have unacceptable side effects and spark the emergence of resistant viruses.

US insurers must now decide whether they will pay for Truvada, which costs roughly US$10,000 for a year?s supply. Moreover, health-policy experts must script guidelines on how to prescribe it, and how to monitor side effects and HIV infections in people using the drug. ?There are a lot of questions about how to implement it,? says Connie Celum, an HIV researcher at the University of Washington in Seattle, who led a large trial of the drug in East Africa and has begun studies to answer practical delivery questions, such as which subsets of people are at highest risk.

Developed by Gilead Sciences in Foster City, California, Truvada proved particularly effective in the East African trial, published last week: it reduced the incidence of HIV by 75% in people with partners who had been infected. In an earlier trial in the United States, HIV incidence dropped by 44% in men who have sex with men.

But concerns emerged on 10?May at a public meeting of a panel that advised the FDA on its decision. Most members voted in favour of approval, but the researchers, doctors and patient advocates in attendance wrestled with the issue of drug resistance. The two drugs in Truvada, emtricitabine and tenofovir, are effective antiretroviral treatments, but trials have shown that viruses exposed to lower doses in the acute phase of infection can become resistant, said meeting attendees. In six people who tested negative on enrolment but turned out to be HIV-positive, the drugs were no longer effective. Another fear, unconfirmed in trials, was that people might not take the pill consistently,and might contract a strain of HIV that became drug-resistant as a result of exposure to low levels of anti?retrovirals.

To mitigate these risks, the FDA requires that Truvada be prescribed only once an individual has tested negative for HIV. The agency also advises that people use the drug in combination with safe sex practices, and get tested for the virus every three months while taking it. Some experts at the advisory meeting proposed stricter policies, such as making the tests mandatory, but these were dismissed as impractical. Another idea was to limit the drug to specific populations who are at the very highest risk, such as homosexual people who use intra?venous drugs, but the FDA adopted a vaguer category encapsulating anyone at high risk of contracting HIV. ?We want to reach marginalized populations,? says Celum, ?and restricting access would mean that Truvada would be less likely to have a public-health impact.?

Wayne Chen, acting chief of medicine at the AIDS Health Foundation in Los Angeles, California, regrets the decision to approve the drug, saying that condoms are cheaper and can be a more effective preventative. ?The best thing would be to have this drug withdrawn from the market, and if it?s not, there should at least be mandatory testing because we know that people don?t take this as prescribed,? he says, citing a Truvada clinical trial in Africa that was ended prematurely because the drug was not preventing infection. Blood tests later confirmed that fewer than 40% of the study participants on Truvada had been taking the pills daily.

To proponents, however, the promise of the drug is bright. Salim Abdool Karim, director of the Center for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa in Durban, hopes that Truvada might soon be available in his country, where up to one-quarter of women have HIV by the age of 20. ?Truvada is now the only technology we have that empowers women,? he says. ?I don?t think we?ll be able to slow the HIV epidemic in South Africa without something to protect them.?

Chickasaw Nation opens new health clinic in Ardmore

ARDMORE, Okla. Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby said opening of the Chickasaw Nation Ardmore Health Clinic Monday marked a "major milestone" in continuing efforts to enhance health care for American Indians in the area.

Gov. Anoatubby was joined by dozens of tribal officials, local officials, area residents and other distinguished guests during a July 16 ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the new 66,000 square foot medical clinic. Located at 2510 Chickasaw Blvd., the new facility is more than six times the size of the original clinic opened in 1988.

"Health care has always been a high priority for our administration," said Gov. Anoatubby. "Our health care team works diligently to continually improve the overall quality of life of Chickasaw citizens and other American Indians by offering the highest quality care possible."

The new two-story building is connected to the old facility through an enclosed corridor, providing increased space for existing services as well as expanded services.

New and expanded services include behavioral health, physical therapy, which was previously housed in the Ardmore wellness center, a drive-thru pharmacy, audiology, Ultrasound, Dexa Scan and Mammography. Additionally, staff will increase from 25 to approximately 100 employees.

The increase in staffing is made possible through the Indian Health Service Joint Venture Funding program.

"The Chickasaw Nation is excited about the new services we can now offer American Indians," said Gov. Anoatubby. "Our goal is to always improve and increase the care we provide."

Planning for the expansion of the clinic began in 2009 as the number of patient visits continued to dramatically increase.

"Members of the clinic staff were involved in planning the design for this center," said Gov. Anoatubby. "We believe that will help make this new clinic more patient-friendly, and also more caregiver friendly."

The first phase of enlarging the capacity of the clinic consisted of an expansion of the existing facility. Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) federal stimulus grant, the phase one remodeling project was completed in September 2010. That project included two new exam rooms, a larger pharmacy with a consultation room and other updates.

The Joint Venture construction program was established to develop partnerships between tribes and the Indian Health Service. Under the competitive program, tribes who acquire or construct a tribally-owned health care facility may be selected to participate.

In exchange for purchasing or constructing a health care facility with tribal funds, the Indian Health Service provides funding for certain staffing and operational costs.

History of the Ardmore Clinic:
The Chickasaw Nation opened its first outpatient health clinic in Ardmore on Jan. 14, 1985.

Temporarily located in the west end of the administration building on the Carter Seminary campus, the clinic was staffed by qualified medical personnel including a doctor, a dentist, two dental assistants, a registered nurse, and a physician's assistant.

At the time, the clinic was serving about 31 patients a day.

Prior to the opening of the Ardmore clinic, outpatient and inpatient services were available at Carl Albert Indian Health Facility (CAIHF) in Ada, Okla., while a health clinic in Tishomingo, Okla., provided outpatient services only.

In May 1986, the Chickasaw Nation became one of the 13 tribes to be awarded U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant for the construction of a new clinic in Ardmore. More than 30 tribes had applied for the very competitive grants.

Construction of the 10,000 square foot health care facility on three acres in the northwest corner of the Carter Seminary campus began in August 1987. The clinic was opened in July, 1988.

In addition to a dental clinic, laboratory and a pharmacy, the new Ardmore clinic housed environmental health services, public health nursing, mental health services, Women, Infants and Children's (WIC) nutrition program, audiology screenings, pre-natal care and well-baby follow-ups after birth.

As a result of a decade-long partnership between the tribe and the three federal agencies Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), IHS and HUD, the Ardmore Clinic strived to meet the health care needs of the Native American population in the southwestern region of the Chickasaw Nation.

Today, the Chickasaw Nation Division of Health (CNDH), under the leadership and vision of Gov. Anoatubby, serves more than 350,000 patient visits each year in the new state-of-the-art Medical Center in Ada and satellite clinics in Ardmore, Tishomingo, Durant and Purcell. The CNDH staff and employees continue to strive daily to promote better health, wellness and nutrition among the American Indian population.

No. 1 star -- Chris Weidman: With title-shot implications hanging over his bout with Mark Munoz, Weidman wanted to make a statement. He made a clear one with a second-round elbow that knocked Munoz out.

No. 2 star -- Nate Marquardt: A year ago, he was unemployed after out-of-whack testosterone levels forced him out of a UFC bout. Now, he's the Strikeforce welterweight champion due to a memorable fourth-round knockout of Tyron Woodley. Today, you spell redemption N-A-T-E.

No. 3 star -- Jason High: Strikeforce showed almost every fight from Saturday night's card. Every fight, except High's 26-second submission of Nate Moore by guillotine. It wouldn't have taken much to squeeze in a minute of fighting, but they didn't. Instead, check out the play-by-play from MMA Junkie to find out what happened:

Winning a Super Bowl not only will complete receiver Larry Fitzgerald?s career, but it also will distinguish him from the growing throng of big-numbers-no-titles wideouts who can?t get in to Canton without paying the admission fee.

And so, as the Cardinals prepare to face the Saints on August 5 at Fawcett Stadium, Fitzgerald will get a little extra incentive for his attempt to return at least five years after he calls it quits.

In an interview with the Hall of Fame?s website, Fitzgerald addresses the fact that two former Pitt Panthers will be inducted the day before the game: ?Curtis Martin and Chris Doleman.

And Fitzgerald even breaks out some Pitt trivia along the way.

?Though my career at Pitt lasted only two seasons, the experience left me with strong positive feelings about the city, the university, the coaches, my teammates and the great people of Pittsburgh,? Fitzgerald says, even though a loss to the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII may have dimmed his view of the ?Burgh, just a bit. ??It was an enjoyable time in my life, and I sometimes reflect on the football program?s longstanding success. ?Our eight Hall of Famers covered every decade from the 1950s right through to the turn of the century, showing remarkable consistency. And, let?s not forget that?Joe Stydahar, a 1930s and ?40 Hall of Fame lineman, originally played for Pitt before transferring to our hated archrival, West Virginia. ?His Hall of Fame honor makes nine for Pitt, with an asterisk!?

Technically, Stydahar never played for Pitt, which is why Pitt doesn?t get credit for a ninth Hall of Famer. ?Whether Fitzgerald becomes the ninth is the bigger question.

?Every practice, every play, every series, every game of every season I?m in a chase of the pursuit of greatness,? Fitzgerald says. ??The standard has been set by the likes of?Don Hutson,?Lance Alworth,?Charley Taylor,?Jerry Rice?and?Michael Irvin. So, I just try and stay healthy, focused, productive and humble and reach for greater heights ? getting back to and winning the Super Bowl.?

If that happens, he?ll be joining the other all-time great receivers in the Hall of Fame. ?He still may make it without a championship, but it would be easier to get a bronze bust if he can flash a diamond ring.
